Can you tell me why you do what you do? I mean its a whole lot easier to listen to someone elses hard work than to play,so why do we do it?

Because I don't like to get up at 7:00 a.m., I like to play golf in the daytime, and I'm not psychologically equipped to handle a REAL job.
Just think about it... I get PAID to play music for people!!

1. Can't fix things...can't build things..hate to cut grass, wash cars, etc. Extra income from playing makes me not feel guilty about hiring someone to do the things I do badly.

2. Daytime work involves creating music scores for films we produce, some radio and TV, so it all works together.

3. Been doing it longer than anything else.

4. Girls, parties (MUCH younger days!).

5. A lifelong learning experience...great fellowship with other musicians.

Whats this? You make MONEY doing this! You have it made
Playing is a luxury to me. I learned I could fix things way before I knew I could play. Now I never need a repairman for anything(almost),but I can't play as much as I want to.
I must be wired to play because I love to do it even though I am no Mozart.Playing in church doesn't pay me anything but then thats not why I play. I would be great to make a few buck at it though.

I see guys in my back yard (golf course) spending lots of money and getting frustrated most of the time. I'm getting paid to play, having more fun, and we certainly get more babes than golfers do!

We play because we all have big egos. We need to perform and show off to other people.

Don,

You have to get up before 7 to play golf just to escape the heat. Up here we have to get up before August!

Wow!! I suppose it's not very politically correct these days to say this, but that pic reminded me of the old Hoagy Carmichael song that goes something like:

Oh gee, ain't it grand to have a girl so big and fat
So when you go to hug her you don't know where you're at
You have to take a piece of chalk in your hand
And hug and chalk and mark the place where you began
Then one day, I was a-huggin' and a-chalkin' and a-beggin' her to be my bride
When I met another fella with some chalk in his hand
A-comin' round the other side,
And over the mountains, and down the great divide.

Oh, they don't write them like that anymore - probably get locked up.

I WAS BORN TO BE A MUSICIAN!!!

Started playing drums at 5 years old with natural groove and timing, singing at 7, then piano at 18.

As the old 60's song says:

"if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, better make an ugly woman your wife"

They indeed don't write them like they used to.

Hate to be a bubble burster....but the line is in fact..
"If you want to be happy for the rest of your life"
"Never make a pretty woman your wife"
"So from my personal point of view..."
"Get an ugly girl to marry you"
...based on this scenerio...I must be VERY unhappy!!

I thought it was all the long hairs in spandex who were getting the women. I'm glad I never went there, probably would have ended up with VD or worse. I'm going to start a new one. Why do all the women like musicians?
I know the original coke bottle was designed a certain shape so us men would like it(its true). And certain theorys exist that the guitar exudes the likeness of an extension of.........well you know, that still leaves me wondering about us keyboard players.
I am happily married and not shopping so this is a nonissue with me,in addition I play in church, not exactly a place where all the hotties are getting drunk and loose, and even if there are hotties I'm not looking.
Your musings on the er,weight abundant.......skinny challenged, reminded me of another short quip."Fatty and skinny laying in bed fatty rolled over and skinny was dead."
I personally never liked the very skinny girls, they were not healthy. Give me a big boned girl, most importantly a girl with a big heart.

Hi! I am Renig's daughter. And as I have a tendency to be attracted to men who are musicians myself, I thought I would take a crack at this question...

First, a musician that performs live exudes a certain confidence. Second, I think it is quite something to watch a musician who is "into" what they are doing...watching someone do what they love, what they are passionate about, is an amazing thing to watch.

Or, we could go with the Freudian interpretation....the Oedipus Electra Complex...where I resent my mother and identify with my father and so seek other musicians like him.

But I prefer the former explanation to the latter, but undoubtedly, my Dad's passion for music does influence my like of musicians...as does my Mum's passion for music (she is a musician too).

Thanks for your input from another perspective. I hope I haven't offended anyone with my surface humor, I know most women are far deeper than that when looking for a guy. I can't hardly imagine the guy with the big wart on his nose and 100 pounds overweight being very alluring to the average female I don't care hope good he plays, unless he has money just kidding.
It is hard to exude confidence sometimes when the director changes keys without telling anyone or when he throws that extra song in you dont have or are not familiar with, but I try to look like I know what I'm doing.

A very musically family...

Once I've met a girl in a music shop where I'm buying my guitar strings. She was so beautiful, her looking was so young and fresh and her smile touched my heart and my soul. Right in that moment I had the vision to make music with her - she was a pianist/keyboardist...

Well, I think it's really not unusual that somebody's getting attracted to somebody else who shares the same interests. It's mostly a good recipe for a long and happy partnership...
Regards, Danny

P.S. Believe me, in my younger days I'd have probably been in much less trouble if I actually DID like boys. No such luck, though!

That's my girl!!!!

Yes, for me it's absolutlely essential to have shared and common interests with the love of your life. I have been blessed in that regard.

We are indeed a musical family. My lovely wife shares vocal duties in our duo. My daughter is a 'natural' - I've never heard her hit a note off pitch. Dad was a first tenor with The London Welsh Male Voice Choir and my aunt Leah was a member of the chorus at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for over 30 years. I was fortunate enough to recently buy a CD recorded at the garden in 1955 of La Traviata with my aunt Leah in the role of Annina (Violetta's maid). The role of Violetta being sung by none other than the great Maria Callas.

Hope you guys don't mind me blowing my own trumpet - but I'm so darn proud of all of 'em.

When there's a song playing in your head 24/7, and your fingers play the chords and your feet tap the rhythm what else are you going to do?

I have lived and loved music all my 55 years. Playing is a necessary outlet for me.

Isn't it GREAT that we can joke, kid, and everyone knows it's only to show friendship and to enjoy common interests?

Renig, sorry about the reference to Guild guitars. I was confusing our posts on common subjects with discussions involving Freddy from the Netherlands (old memory ain't what it used to be).

You really should be proud of ALL of your family members, including YOURSELF, for being the person you are.

Thanks for the birthday wishes and, yep, I did wonder about the Guild guitars reference. I think the only time I've mentioned guitars on this forum was some while ago during some chat about Hagstrom guitars, but I'm not sure if you were involved in that discussion. See, the old dendrites aren't firing too well in this old head either.

Best regards,
renig

Dendrites? Man, since you know what those are, I wouldn't worry too much about losing it...very sharp!

For some reason, I thought you were younger than me, but we're about the same age. I turned 60 in September.

We both have some miles on us, but you're firing on all 8 cylinders, for sure! And, judging by her message, you have a fine, intelligent daughter. You "done good"!I have a 35 year old daughter who is a little flakey...kid of a hippy...have no ideal how that happened (He, HE")!

Maybe there is something to this attraction stuff.
I ended up married to a piano player, although that was the last one of her many tributes to find out about
I was a piano player and that was my only attraction to her,

other then owning a couple companies

But we been having a jam session for 30 years now and 5 of those years we played concerts all over the US.

Boys my advice is marry a country girl and then you only get married once.

I shoulda married Jann first

I married THREE of them. Maybe the problem is that none of them were ugly.

Oh well, the third time was a charm.
