For me, it would be fusion jazz...I'd like to kick Lee Ritenauer's a**! What's stopping me? Lack of talent, and I don't really want to starve to death!

How about you?

I have to agree with you totally Russ. I just love jazz fusion. But I am not not able to perform that music to the level I'd like so I don't. But that is what I love to listen to. And generous helpings of funk mixed in is always welcome.

I got a couple of DVDs from Netflix I have been watching recently. One is "Rite Of Strings" which is Al Di Meola, Stanley Clarke and Jean Luc Ponty and is just amazing to watch and listen to. The other is Average White Band live which has wonderful funk arrangements.

Like always, I need to practice a whole lot more. But it's cool that there are always players out there that always make me want to improve my own playing. I guess by the time I am 90 I should be pretty good .... I hope.

Russ,

I like listening to just about all styles of music except rap. I still prefer to play standards from the big band era. That of course is my problem. I need to get more modern.

I want to be able to hear and understand the lyrics or melody line, and I like it to have a predictable and pleasing chord structure. This encompasses a wide variety of genres, but it also eliminates a few.

No, you certainly don't have to choose, but most of us have a preference.

Tough one if you think a bit longer about it.
I do have my favorites but then comes the BUT...

I'll give them in a random order, so there's no number one favorit. and when I am finished I can overview and maybe see which is my favorite..
I only mention the styles which I prefer in a band situation that is..

Jazz, BUT where are you gonna GIG on a regular basis...

Jazz fusion, BUT same as jazz...

60 and 70ties pop/rock/latin-rock,funk,soul, BUT with the exeption of some songs, not really a challenge for me anymore...

Blues, BUT maybe an hour at the most, after an hour I get bored...

Progressive Rock, BUT again where are you gonna GIG on a regular basis...

After re-reading I come to the conclusion I am doing exactly what I prefer.

That's 60ties/70ties (occasionally some 80/90ties as well), BECAUSE there are regular GIGS, There is YELLNG/CLAPPING audience, As a band we often have these unique occasions everything is wright, the band is ONE swinging machine no individual.
(don't know how to describe this but if you have played in a good band you know what I mean) whatever style you play nothing beats that unique feeling.
To maintain the challenge we just learn continously new old songs...

So my friends NOW I wonder WHY you have a particular style that you prefer..

Big Band, Sinatra, all types of Latin, and jazz if it stays within a structure.

I like driving music, but I like it without the high volume, that eliminates a good pile. If the volume is down then blues and swing are favorites.

Tom Cavanaugh, you do not have to get modern, the only requirement is to enjoy.

Hi George

You may want to check into this book/CD. I've had many positive responses on this and is one of the more popular ones that I sell on ebay. Shortly, I will have about another 60 books listed for anyone that has an interest.

Although I enjoy this Synth Zone I am not really into a lot of modern music.
I enjoy some classical, that what was termed semi classical and songs from the musicals.
I love a good melody and meaningfull lyrics, preferably romantic stuff that lifts the heart or calms the soul.

Ed...Mark is GREAT...knew Dick Dale casually when I was in California in the early 60's. Found surf guitar to be really easy to play, especially Dick Dale style. Not very familiar with choice # 3. Any help?
