Thank you Nigel!

Makes my 40-something heart beat afresh - uncanny ability at such a young age - and reminds me of the seemingly unbelievable (at the time!) stories surrounding a 14-year-old Steve Vai (and his mum, if the rumours are correct) trying to persuade Frank Zappa to take him on tour in the late 70s-80s (I think this is right . . ? . . .)

Apparently Frank wouldn't allow it til Steve was 16 - bummer. . . . .

When you see something like this it makes those Steve Vai stories quite believable. I guess the kid in this video will be quite capable of touring by the age of 14. Damnit the kid is only 8 .... how long can he have been playing for?

I never saw Zappa and Vai play together unfortunately though I have seen them both live separately. I saw Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention a couple of times back in the 70s with Jean Luc Ponty ( violin ), George Duke ( keyboards ), Ian & Ruth Underwood ( sax/xylophone ) and Ansley Dunbar ( drums ). Amazing stuff. Oh and of course Frank Zappa conducted the band and played lots of "in-yer-face" guitar. I saw Steve Vai about 10 years ago at Ventura Theater. I have seen a quite a few good guitar players at that local venue up the road from my home in Ventura including Larry Carlton, Joe Satriani and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. There always so much more to learn lol. And I'm getting so old you'd think I should have it all down by now. Then young kids really make me open my eyes and I go back to practicing. By the time I die I should be a pretty good player by then

The kid had a nice technique but the trick will be to turn that into something musical, i.e. melody, beat, chord changes.
When I worked in the music store there was a ton of young kids that came in and played all these memorized licks and riffs but none of them could play a song, or make music they could only copy.
Nigel I'm sure you could copy those licks, but you play in a band so you know the real trick is to make that a useful part of the song.
If you played that all night everynight it would get old fast.

mikeathome1....
Your observation is quite valid. The lightning licks are impressive, but they do get old very fast. Our guitarist, Bill, always impresses me with his ability, and it's not because of his intricate finger work, but more...he knows how & where it's needed, and he never over does it. So again, I know where you're coming from. Unless you can make out some sort of melody or chord progression, it's gonna get stale real quick, but I do admire the young man's dexterity.

Tell the truth Nigel, that was really you when you were 8 wasn't it?

Do you think the kid can play in the key of Eb?

It's a real pity you can't see it Tony. What OS are you running ? though I know people with Windows and MacOS that were able to see it. Have you tried it again since and left it for while before giving up on it ? It's a shame it can't be saved locally or I'd download to my hard drive, but I can only view it.
