Jimmy's "the Man"! Interesting to listen to when you're used to hearing that strong left hand walking bass on most material. Still, the bass dude was really slapping on the intro.

Thanks,

Russ

Enjoyed Jack McDuff most, because it is closer to traditonal B-3-the "other Jimmy" is also a favorite.

GREAT STUFF!

Me, TOO! Last time I saw Jimmy Smith, I was working the WNOP Jazz Festival out of Cincinnati. Jimmy Smith and James Moody were just hours off the plane from a tour in Japan.

Jimmy, of course, was sitting at the B-3. James was standing with his horn. They were exactly the same height!

That's the first time I heard Jimmy in a full back-up/support role. While he was so famous for that walking left hand, he was WONDERFUL at pedal bass and gorgeous inverted chords. I still remember it...."There I go...there I go...there I go...

Moody was a fabulous singer, in addition to being "da man" on tenor.

A great memory!

Thanks so much for the chance to reflect on one of the most enjoyable music experiences I've ever had.

thank you for the story!

I met jimmy a couple of times. The first he had a rotton cold but we had met with him at the Jazz cafe in London as he had agreed to be photographed. It was very rare to find a good image of Jimmy actually at the keys then.

My colleage Mark Hill and I were very lucky to be at this night and we have a few fantastic photos:
http://www.hammond-organ.com/Artist/html/jsmith.htm

The second one was from a small balcony/lighting rig that we were able to walk on...you can see his two favourite drawbar combinations.

From what I recall he used fast Leslie only once all night...and kept you hanging on for it all the time. he is a master od understatement.

they make for great wall pictures.

Great minds really do think alike! Part of our business involves commercial photography and video production.

We both are B-3-jazz guys, and you are a fan of Ketron instruments (me, too-just not crazy about some of their business practices here in the US).

Could be "brothers from different mothers".

I'll look up some old negs I have of Jack McDuff, a friend of mine, Winston Walls (B-3 dude who died a few years back-toured with McDuff for a long time) and me at a club in Dayton in the mid-70's.

Thanks so much!

Russ

PS: look on-line to see footage of Winston...a crusty dynamo on the B-3, for sure. Lots of people knew about him, including Tony Monaco, who thinks that Winston was a "monster". Two other members (Chas and Rory) and I are planning to visit Tony at a gig he'll play at summer NAMM in a month or so.
