I like it so far...now if I can get it programmed the way I want it..

It works great with my Laptop..The built in MIDI interface is great, and USB powered helps out too..

I have been able to play my sequences with my soft synths, and real play with other soft synths[4 zones]..set with quick changes of the zones for different instrumentation...Check out the link DNJ posted..

I was trying to decide between the Roland[Edirol] PCR800[very similar]...waiting to hear from Don Mason..but he is traveling....so I went for the stocked Axiom 61..

Just got back. I like the Edirol a lot, but I have never tried the Axiom. Sorry I couldn't get back to you in time.

Diki, probably lighter than the G70..keys are shorter than the G70 also...Playing the G70, is much more enjoyable, as expected..

The resistance[keys], is similar to the A37, maybe a little more...

The Edirol is closer to the PSR3000, maybe a little better. Very light and responsive. If you're a piano player you won't like it.

If any of you guys get your hands on the PCR-800 please share you thoughts with me. I'm very interested in this unit. For the price it "appears" to be one hell of a midi controller--with bonus software for just a few hundred bucks. It looks like a great answer to that "extra computer" I've got laying around.

I'm also very interested in the software synth that ships with the PCR series and how it sounds. Anyways, if anyone test drives one please share your impressions with me.

Squeak, check out the Axiom..apparently a better feel keyboard than the PCR800[Don's view that it feels like a 3K]..and it has all the goodies..even after touch..8 velocity settings, 4 zones..touch and after touch pads etc..

Fran, M-Audio kinda scares me anymore. They haven't really had a good track record lately for "reliable" equipment. If the semi-weigthed keys on this unit are the same as those on the M-Audio Keystation 61 ES.., then my interest would be gone.

M-Audio has had a lot of complaints regarding the inconsistent velocity levels with their midi controller, as well as numerous quality control issues.

I'd rather spend my money with a company like Roland/Edirol who has a much better history, and I trust their products.

I've been using it for about two months now. Before that I had the PCRM80, which is very similar.
It is easy to use, very light in weight and has plenty of buttons, sliders and knobs to assign.
With the PCRM80, several of the keys stopped working after the unit was unused for a couple of months. I had to take it apart and move the contact strip around a little, and that seemed to correct it. There were many complaints online about this.
So far, the 800 has not shown any indications of having this problem.
I strictly use it as a midi controller for the Midjay, but it is primarily designed to interace with a PC, and comes with a nice software package. Also, technical support was been very good and friendly.

Squeak , check it out first..The key feel is better on the Axiom, and it is at the top of most referrals..

BTW: you know I am a Roland fan, but the track record of earlier Edirol controllers is poor..they were designed for computer home use...until this PCR800 model[I am sure it is great]...The Axiom is in this class...made for performing musicians and not just home computer novice[no offense to anyone..just fact]..

The Axiom has more control than the PCR800, and designated software to set it up[Enigma]..You won't go wrong with either of them...but don't base the decision on history of earlier models..

On the downside, or upside..however you look at...It is much more pleasure to play a real arranger as the G70...but for my band use..this Axiom may just be the ticket...especially those two flights of stair case jobs..

I'll have a look at it Fran.., Some of the reviews for the Axiom haven't been too promising though. Plus (again) the issue of "inconsistent" velocity was brought up with this model too. There's also an issue with the "pads" on the Axiom. From what I've read the problem is that these pads need to be tapped dead center to get the proper response. Which also raises the question why have larger pads if the pressure contact is dead center, and sections of that pad outside dead center would not be responsive enough for drum pograms (it helps to get sound from all around the pad)..??? Pad response would def be an issue with me as I would use those pads extensively to program drums.

I've been wanting to get away from keyboard drumming as (others may not realize), but keyboard drumming can be very hard on a keybed--especially over an extended period of time. I don't know about the pads on the PCR-800--maybe Don can shed some light on that one.

I'll be calling around this weekend to see if any local stores have either models on display--won't hold my breath though, as the stores here just plain suck

Either way there's some changes coming for my set up (and soon). The Fantom X6 already has a place cleared off for it, as well as a space for (either) the PSR-S-700 or S-900. I'm still strongly considering that new lower end 76 key model by Yammie that George posted about.

I have a spare computer, and I wanted to have my second computer set up for recording purposes as well. That new PCR-800 would be able to sit on my computer desk, and not require a stand So the issue of space is gone... (pleases the wife too) I wouldn't need massive studio monitors either. I just find that whole software bundle that ships with the PCR-800 very interesting!

DON HAVE YOU PLAYED WITH THE SOFTWARE SYNTH THAT SHIPS WITH THE PCR-800???? Could you (if you get the time) send me some mp3's of those sounds. I would really like to hear them. I could call you if you like to. Email me if you want.

Most of those reviews are the human error problem.

Fran are you using a software arranger with this setup? If so which, and how do you like it?
I have a laptop that is doing nothing maybe I should turn it into an arranger, at least for home use. Anybody have suggestions.

Mike..Yes..this is my whole concept of using a light controller..I am able to play B4 and my other favorite soft synths..I have JammerLive[I like it because it is super easy to use..although I am limited to about 50-60 styles]..I also have OneManBand that reads Yamaha styles...I do want to set the Axiom up in a very complex way,,using all the controllers..If my patience doesn't run dry first...How will you be able to tell if I had it..you say............??

BTW: the built in midi interface is great ..saves me the external hook up between my keyboard and laptop...And the USB powered is great too..both via USB cable..

Bill yes I do..at over 50 pounds..I just wanted a light set up to use with my trio, and this looks like it will work..I have the MediaStation and the G70 for back ups to the Axiom..

Squeak, Why don't you look for a used Roland R 8, Has everything you need for pad drumming and works like a charm.

Fran, is getting more committed to the software solution all the time. Once there he will never look back...excellent sound, operation and reliability....it is made to measure (tailor made)!!!

I can now quietly go away and rest in peace knowing music will be made (created) the way it should.

No I haven't. I have not even opened or installed it. Seems my gear isn't at home much, and I don't intend to use it that way anyway.
If I get a chance though, I'll check it out.

Frank, How are you doing?

Fran, thanks for asking. I am coming thru one of the darkest periods of my life. In the last three years my dog died, my wife suffers from incurable cancer and I have had both hips replaced. I am personaly doing a lot better...but it would be great if only I could say the same thing for my wife. At least I can do more around the house.

I am still playing my software based arranger and keeping it updated. I play mostly at home for my own amusement.
