Aftertouch a.k.a. Pressure. Many Midi keyboards nowadays can send Aftertouch messages. This means that if you press harder on a key already held down, a corresponding Aftertouch value is generated and transmitted. Can be used to add more expression to your playing, for instance by controlling the amount of pitch modulation (Vibrato). Amount The extent by which a modulation source influences a certain parameter. Attack Second phase of a Matrix-1000 envelope. The attack is the ascent rate from the starting point - after an optional delay - to the point where it reaches it's highest level. Bank a group of up to 100 individual Patches Cutoff Frecuency Most important parameter of the VCF. In the Matrix-1000 low pass filter, the frequencies below this point can pass through and those above get filtered out.
CV
Acronym for Control Voltage.
DCO
Acronym for Digitally Controlled Oscillator. Decay Third phase of the envelope. The decay value sets the descent rate of the envelope once the attack phase has reached it's peak and drops to the sustain level. Delay First stage of the Matrix-1000 envelopes. The delay represents the amount of time the envelope waits until it starts the ascent of the attack stage. Envelope Envelopes are used to shape or modulate a sound over a given time. They start off after receiving a trigger - usually a Note On event - and travel through the stages delay, attack, decay, sustain and finally, after a Note Off is received, release.
LFO
Acronym for Low Frequency Oscillator.
MIDI
Acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface Modulation Occurs when a modulator - or modulation source - influences a destination sound parameter by a certain amount. Note On / Note Off Probably the most important Midi message as it determines the pitch and velocity of every note played. The pitch is set by the transmitted note number between 0 and 127. Velocity can range from 1 to 127 for Note On, whereas a Velocity value of 0 makes it a Note Off command. Pitchbend A special high-resolution Midi controller message generated by by manipulating the pitchbend handle or wheel on your keyboard. As the name implies this controller "bends" the pitch of the note(s) played, like a solo guitarists bending his strings. Patch All the parameters that make up a Matrix-1000 sound. Release Last stage of an envelope. The release value describes the descent rate of the envelope to it's minimum after the trigger (Note On) is terminated. Note that the release stage is initiated immediately when this occurs, regardless of the envelope's current status. Resonance Important parameter of the VCF. It emphasizes a narrow band around the filter cutoff frequency by amplifying those frequencies. At high levels of resonance the filter will eventually start to self-oscillate, generating an almost pure sine wave. Sustain Sets the level at which the envelope amplitude remains constant when a note is held after the decay stage. SysEx Short for System Exclusive. Refers to a type of Midi data that is pertinent to one type or model only, ie. patch parameters and other 'non-standard' bits of information. Trigger A signal that can activate certain events, like the start of an envelope or LFO cycle. A trigger is sent whenever you press a key or send a Note On. Some modules can be triggered by 'External Trigger'. On the Matrix-1000 this has been mapped to Midi controller # 64.
VCA
Acronym for Voltage Controlled Amplifier.
