About G-70 Driver

The drivers included in this folder are for Mac OS 9 series. These cannot be used in the Classic environment of Mac OS X.
The G-70 driver consists of the following drivers.
G-70 USB Driver
This driver connects the G-70 to your Macintosh via USB. This driver must be installed in order to use each of the following drivers.
 
G-70 OMS Driver
This is a driver for using the G-70 with OMS (*1). In order to use it, you will need to separately obtain OMS Version 2.3.5 or later.
*The G-70 OMS driver is provided as an additional module that allows the G-70 to be used with OMS. In order to use it, OMS must already be installed on the startup disk.
 
G-70 FreeMIDI Driver
This is a driver for using the G-70 with FreeMIDI (*2). In order to use it, you will need to separately obtain FreeMIDI Version 1.35 or later.
*The G-70 FreeMIDI driver is provided as an additional module that allows the G-70 to be used with FreeMIDI. In order to use it, FreeMIDI must already be installed on the startup disk.
 

*1: OMS (Developer: Opcode Systems, Inc)
OMS is MIDI driver software that passes data between the computer and MIDI devices.

*2: FreeMIDI (Developer: Mark of the Unicorn, Inc)
FreeMIDI is MIDI driver software that passes data between the computer and MIDI devices.


System requirements

This driver has the following requirements.

*This driver has been shown to function properly when used with average computer systems having specifications that conform to the above guidelines. You should be aware, however, that there are numerous other variables that can affect performance, including differences in hardware design, system configuration, and overall combination of software applications that are used. Therefore, the actual system requirements could be different than the above.

Cautions and Limitations


Installation

Installing the G-70 Driver (USB, OMS, FreeMIDI)

The G-70 USB driver will be installed when you use "G-70 Driver-E Installer." Depending on your system, the G-70 OMS driver and G-70 FreeMIDI driver may also be installed.
  1. Double-click the "G-70 Driver-E Installer" icon to start up the installer.
    *The OMS driver will not be installed if OMS has not been installed correctly on your system. If you want to use OMS, click [Quit] to abort the driver installation, and install OMS correctly. Then perform the driver installation once again.
    *The FreeMIDI driver will not be installed if FreeMIDI has not been installed correctly on your system. If you want to use FreeMIDI, click [Quit] to abort the driver installation, and install FreeMIDI correctly. Then perform the driver installation once again.
  2. Click [Install].
  3. A "This installation requires your computer to restart ---" dialog box will appear. Click [Continue].
  4. When installation is completed, click [Restart] to restart your computer.

This completes installation of the G-70 driver. Next you will make OMS settings or FreeMIDI settings.


Before you begin

OMS settings

  1. Use a USB cable to connect the G-70 and your computer.
  2. In the "Opcode" folder, open the "OMS Applications" folder, and double-click the "OMS Setup" icon.
  3. If the "Apple Talk" dialog box appears, select [Turn It Off]. Then click [OK] in the dialog box that appears next.
  4. The first time OMS is started up, a "Create a New Studio Setup" dialog box will appear. Click [OK]. If this is the second or later time, select "New Studio Setup" from the File menu.
  5. The "OMS Driver Search" dialog box will appear. Click [Search].
  6. When the search has been completed, verify that the "OMS Driver Setup" dialog box lists the "Roland G-70," and click [OK].
    *If the dialog box does not show "Roland G-70," check whether the G-70 is connected correctly, and start up OMS Setup once again.
  7. Verify that the "OMS MIDI Device Setup" dialog box lists the "Roland G-70," and with the check box checked, click [OK].
    *For other connected MIDI devices as well, add a check mark to the port(s) you want to use. For details on settings, refer to the manual that came with your MIDI device.
     Roland can provide no guarantees or support regarding the operation of MIDI device made by another company. Please contact the manufacturer of your MIDI device.
  8. A dialog box will appear, allowing you to save the settings in a file. Input the desired filename, and click [Save].
  9. In the Studio Setup window, change the device name indicating the MIDI device connected to the G-70 as follows. Click the device name, and you will be able to edit it.
  10. "Port 1" > "G-70 MIDI IN,OUT"
  11. From the File menu, select "Save."
  12. From the Edit menu, select "OMS MIDI Setup." In the OMS MIDI Setup dialog box that appears, check "Run MIDI in background," and click [OK].
  13. Verify that MIDI transmission and reception occur correctly. From the Studio menu, choose [Test Studio].
    *If a MIDI sound module is connected to the G-70, the following step will cause a relatively loud sound to be produced by the sound generator, so it is a good idea to turn down the volume on the sound generator first.
  14. If a MIDI sound module is connected to the G-70's MIDI OUT connector, click the "G-70 MIDI IN,OUT" icon in the Studio Setup window. If you hear sound, the settings have been made correctly.

  16. After you have verified this, and exit OMS Setup.
  17. Make MIDI device settings on your sequencer software. For details on settings, refer to the manual that came with your software.

This completes OMS settings.


FreeMIDI settings

  1. Use a USB cable to connect the G-70 and your computer.
  2. Open the "FreeMIDI Applications" folder, and double-click the "FreeMIDI Setup" icon.
    *When "OMS is installed on this computer..." appears, click [FreeMIDI].
  3. The first time FreeMIDI is started up, a "Welcome to FreeMIDI!" dialog box will appear. Click [Continue]. If this is the second or later time, select "FreeMIDI Preferences" from the File menu.
  4. Make sure that "Use OMS when available" is unchecked in the FreeMIDI Preferences dialog box. If it is checked, remove the check mark, and restart FreeMIDI.
  5. In the FreeMIDI Preferences dialog box, check "G-70 Port" which is located below G-70 Driver in MIDI Configuration, and click [OK].
    *If the dialog box does not show "G-70 Driver," check whether the G-70 is connected correctly, and start up FreeMIDI Setup once again.
  6. The About Quick Setup dialog box will appear. Click [Continue].
    *If the dialog will not appear, select "Quick Setup" from the Configuration menu.
  7. In the dialog box that appears, set "Studio Location:" to "G-70,G-70 Port." Click [>>Add>>].
  8. When settings are complete, click [Done]. A setting window will appear.
  9. In the setting window, change the device name indicating the MIDI device connected to the G-70 as follows. Click the device name, and you will be able to edit it.
  10. "Device 1" > "G-70 MIDI IN,OUT"
  11. From the File menu, select [Save], and save your settings.
  12. Verify that MIDI transmission and reception occur correctly. From the MIDI menu, choose "Check Connections."
    *If a MIDI sound module is connected to the G-70, the following step will cause a relatively loud sound to be produced by the sound generator, so it is a good idea to turn down the volume on the sound generator first.
  13. If a MIDI sound module is connected to the G-70's MIDI OUT connector, click the "G-70 MIDI IN,OUT" icon in the setting window. If you hear sound, the settings have been made correctly.

  15. After you have verified this, and exit FreeMIDI Setup.
