I'm of no help with that as I've never used one. If I want to transpose I just play in the new key. LOL !
Before he gives up have him contact Roland Support either by phone or email. They are very helpful. Recently sent me a very detailed email about my "saving Preformances" problem.
I think the BK9 is great and although I don't have the experience to really compare it to others I think it will do just about anything you need in an arranger/workstation. I'm sure this is a simple problem to fix.
