I am becoming intrigued by the use of software vs. sound modules, particularly the B4 by Native Inst. However, my knowledge is slim to none regarding this subject. Can anyone recommend a basic book(s) which introduce this subject at a non-expert level? My KB is a PSR3000. Any help would be appreciated.

Tom, software[soft synth] use at a non expert level....I don't think it is possible...Jump into it and in no time you will become an expert user[you have no choice]..

If you ever tried the NI's B4, it will make you a believer..

If you think you would like to get started without spending a lot of bucks...try M=Audio's Key Rig[under $100]..
It gives you a Piano module, a Synth module, an Organ module[not bad], and a GM module...A great value..

Keep in mind you will need a host program like Forte, Sonar,Powertracks[new version] and most high end programs[Acid Pro 5 etc].

Forte works out the best for me[$70]..

Search the posts here at SZ, there is a lot of info..

Fran, you really do make it sound easy. I will investigate some of the programs that you mentioned. Thank you very much.

Fran's on the money. A little Hands On is the best way to go in my opinion.

Tom,

If you want to try without making an initial investment, I suggest a look at the freeware at KVR Audio. A great way to get your "feet wet" without spending any money.

If you don't have any software that can host VST instruments, freeware host apps that will host softsynths include :

Audiolabs V dumper http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1475.html

FX expansion Simple Virtual host http://www.kvraudio.com/get/278.html

Herman Seib VST Host: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/300.html

There are others as well.
