I just bought a pair of SXA100's last week but I miss the low end. Does anyone have any recommendation on a powered sub? I saw an SXA180 powered sub for $450, but the size scares me. Are there smaller powered subs out there that is easy to transport?
Thanks, guys.
Phil

The smallest sub I ever heard that actually sounded any good was the EV sb120a. It was only a 12", and it was the same size as the SX series cabinets, but the sound was great. Not THUNDERous, but nice and deep. I think it's discontinued, probably because the 15" and 18" are so much more efficient in the low range. Most people abuse speakers and if you pushed the sb120's they would start to splat. Too much splat and you get .................. the sound of silence.

If you really need the bottom end and don't want a dedicated, large sub... try the Peavey Kosmos with any 15" bass amp. Get a 2 or 3 hundred watt single unit combo amp.....plug the Kosmos into the EV's and send the sub out to the bass amp and you'llbe amazed at the difference. The only other option is to carry something large and bulky. Bass requires air space, both in front and INSIDE the cabinet. It's physics - NOT ergononics that counts when moving air.

IT SHOULD SCARE YOU...IT'S ENORMOUS!!!! I went through the same thrash you are now going through a few months back. I saw and demoed the 180...big and to be honest, not so impressive...I then opted for the Mackie 1501 subwoofer....105 lbs of pure solid bass..but it's 105 freakin pounds...I have to carry it around with a dolly/appliance mover...It's really not that bad, and yes, I have actually picked it up with the handles and moved it, but not very often. I would strongly recommend Uncle Daves idea...I'm sure my sub and I will part ways in the future, when I find a legitimate substitution..I may just get the Mackie combo powered speakers..the 1512's or something like that...they're 60 lbs or so apiece, but easier to handle, 500 watts (average not peak) and you can put them up on poles. I don't think I'll need any bass bin with them. Anyhow, go the lightweight route. Also, I do the DJ thing after the dinner set...If I didn't, I would not have any bass bin period. If you just want more bass presence, absolutely go with Uncle Daves recommendation or some other variation of it. Good Luck Brian

Thank you guys for your inputs...the technical (Uncle Dave, B2 and Luis) and the humourous one (by freddynl)! I'm leaning towards getting a small powered sub that is easy to carry and won't take up much space. I can sacrifice some "air movement", as Uncle Dave explains it. I just want to be able to hear (and feel a little bit of the) bottom end. Luis, I could not find any US distributor for the Montarbo subs.
I'm still be looking...Thanks again, folks.

Check out the EONSUB G2 Powered Speaker - http://www.jblpro.com/eong2/EONSUB.htm I don't know how they sound, but the weight, 43 lbs (same as the SXa 100s) sounds good to me! Wadaya think?

Well I guess I forgot that detail...
Montarbo products are from Italy and the distributor in my country, Portugal, is the same as the Ketron products...
I'll tell you something if I can find the distributor in US.

I like very much the overall sound of compact Hughes & Kettner systems. I own model LUCAS (sub + 2 satellites). The company produces a mini system called LUCAS XT. You can find a detailed description here: http://www.hkaudio.com/as/LUCAS_XT/index.htm

PS: The sub is very lightweight and even smaller than the one Dave mentions in his post ( 10'' ). I'm not sure they sell it separately.
