Synthzone friends!

Ok, I Just recorded another song (on my Tyros2) today. This one's a Latin tune, so I'd like to dedicate this to Synthzone's "Brazilian Jazz" player specialist's: Andrea Rotolo (Dreamer), Armando Ricardi (SD_Fan), ChicoBrasil (Chico Albuquerque), and Dirk Baert (Notlos).

Song Title: Corcovado (Quiet Nights)
Composed by: Antonio Carlos Jobim

I performed it in arranger mode, utilizing Tyros2's internal style: Pop Bossa2.

To listen, go to my website:
Scott Yee Entertainment
then:
Go to the: "Song Demos" Page.
Scroll DOWN to: "Latin" Song Category (bottom right)
Go to: "Corcovado", then
Select: 'DSL/Cable' or '56K' version, to play in Windows Media Audio (WMA) format.

Hope you like it.

Scott

Scott,
I am moved by your dedication.
The song is really very, very enjoyable. I have currently the original CD with Corcovado in my car and play this song all the time, and your rendition really reminds me of the way Astrud Gilberto "handles" this song.
Your guitar solo was excellent, as was the piano bit.
I am let with the desire to listen to this song more and more.
Bravo!

Hi Scott. Nice rendition. I'm impressed by the Tyros II's ability to record live performances in this fashion... certainly makes putting together a live album very easy.

I've been on a Jobim kick lately and have learned quite a few. Just for your entertainment, I thought I'd share my version of a Jobim song you posted some months back, How Insensitive , which is from my new album "From Hilton Head with Love II". It's a little OT since I didn't use arranger technology to create it but it does prominently feature the sound of the Yamaha 9000 Pro which is performing every part except the piano and guitars - those are being performed with Colossus. Some may find it interesting to contrast the sounds of the Tyros II with the 9000 Pro/Colossus combo.

I created this recording starting with Band In A Box to sequence the underlying rhythm, and I altered the volocity settings in Sonar to humanize the percussion. Congas were added manually as were all the underlying keyboards. I sequence using an 88-note hammer-action controller with the 9000 Pro as a sound source and then I substitute select instruments with softsynths, particularly the lead piano using the Steinway samples and the acoustic guitars.

When I perform live I use two systems depending on the gig: one is to use the Yamaha 9000 Pro as an SMF playback device with an 88-note controller playing the 9k's PLG150-PF card live. The other is to strip out the lead piano and create an MP3 file for backing... I then use a digital or grand piano for lead. I am toying with ways to use Colossus live with the 9000 Pro but that's a project in the works. Enjoy!

Esh

Wow, wow! Thanks Scotty and Esh! This is some of my most favorite music; great to hear versions from zone members. I personally prefer most bossa nova tracks as instrumentals -- Esh, you are an artist! -- except for some of the "real" Brazilian female singer versions (Elia Regina, Maria Bethania, etc.). But Scotty you have a nice way of handling the ballad.
Nice work with different approaches.

Wow ! Assuming you're refering to the classic album: "Getz & Gilberto":

I'm humbled to think I even remotely approach Gilberto's legendary rendition: Corcovado - Astrud Gilberto (Song Clip) , Andrea, I really appreciate the compliment, particularly coming from you, SZ's most respected Bossa Nova arranger player. Btw, I really enjoyed our Skype telephone-webcam chat today. It's so nice to keep up a life long friendship with people (such as Andrea Rotolo) who I met on Synthzone over 5 years ago. Synthzone is a terrific catalyst for meeting & forming life long arranger kb musician friendships.

Ok gang, my next Tyros2 performed song is going to be a Van Morrison composed tune. Can you guess which one? (no, not 'Moondance' or 'Brown Eyed Girl').

My guess would be either "someone like you", or "Have I told you lately", your "corcovado" is very pleasing to the ear, love it, thanks!

Scott:

Fantastic job on Quiet Nights!! Of course I'm partial to Latin/Bossas. Very nice work on the guitar and piano solos.

Esh:

Likewise very nice work on your rendition of Quiet Nights. At this point I'm strictly an instrumentalist, so I particularly enjoyed your playing.

Dirk:

I've been to your web site recently and have always enjoyed your music, keep up the good work.

Got a quick story to tell. My wife and I are in Florida vacationing. I usually sit and play at any piano I can find. This evening we were dining in a hotel restaurant in Clearwater. The house pianist was scheduled to start playing at 7 PM. About half hour before he came on I sat at the very well maintained grand piano in the restaurant and played a 20 minute set of some Scott Joplin as well as a Dave Brubeck's "Strange Meadow Lark." The waiter commented how much they enjoyed the set. Short story is the Manager picked up our dinner tab.

Yes, this is perhaps my favorite feature (2nd to new 'super articulation' voices, and terrific key feel) that I love about Tyros2. The convenience of being able to simply hit record removes the traditional recording hassles & headaches, especially when wanting to capture live performances, where spontaneous inspiration is better captured.

Esh (Jim), thanks posting your instrumental of Jobim's How Insensitive. Really enjoyed your instrumental arrangement of which has that signature ESH interpretation. I really enjoyed our meeting last year at DisneyWorld in Orlando, and hope to make it to Hilton Head some day to catch your show.

Good guess'es, but my next song's going to be one of Morrison's lesser known tunes from his 1967 Moondance album, which is perhaps my favorite Morrison album, with every song a gem.

I agree. I especially think the 'Super Articularion Nylon' & Super Articulation Concert' Guitars ideally suited for live bossa nova guitar keyboard emulation soloing. Dirk, looking forward to hearing more wonderful song performed & recorded by you soon. You are a terrific musician.

Never heard his version, but certainly can imagine how his velvet smooth vocal styling would ideally fit this song. Larry, hope all is going well with your music and gigs in Illinois. Hope you might find some time to record and share your music with us here soon.

Thanks again to everyone for your thoughtful replies.

Hi Scott,
We were enjoying ourselves with our entire family in our son’s beach house in North Carolina when you posted this Bossa Nova, so I didn’t have a chance to have a good listen until now. Once again, I’m one of the last to comment on your fine work. This is one of my favorites and you did a fine job with it. I especially like your improvisation on the guitar and the piano. Your choice of style and tempo was right on and the vocal added a nice dimension to the whole mix. As others have pointed out, the clarity of the sounds and especially the vocals is outstanding. Keep posting these recordings!

Hey Scott

Nice work! Very cool arrangement. If you're into do post production I would suggest tying in a simple string counter melody about half way through that would build toward the ending a couple of splash or sizzle cymbal shots building toward the end
Super job ! Loved it as usual.

I certainly can picture what an idyllic setting it must have been, and with your son's family as well. Many thanks for such kind words about my rendition of Corcovado. Btw, I just learned that Paul has recently joined the Tyros2 owner's club. Congratulations to you. Though I realize it's a big switch from the Ketron (MS60) sound, I'm confident you're really going to fall in love with the Tyros2's sound as well, once you've discovered that you're actually able to tweak Tyros2 to deliver a similar to Ketron (raw in your face) punchiness as well.

Hi Kmac: wow, haven't seen you on SZ for a very LONG (too long) time now, so it's great to see u back with us again, as I've long respected your musical knowledge, especially knowing of your formal 'music educator' background, as well as an award winning Technics keyboard artist too. Your suggestion of adding counter-melody strings is well taken and something I'll definitely consider. I need to note though that my aim with this & my other arranger keyboard performance recordings, is showcasing what I do performing live on the keyboard, in 'auto accomp' mode. Kmac: again, welcome back to the (synth) 'zone'.

Hi Scott

That is a nice tune. I can see this going over well for you with your lounge gigs, or anyplace for that matter where you want to get your audience in that dreamy mood.

I enjoyed your guitar and piano improv.

Just returning to SF Bay Area from a nice week in DC/VA and Annapolis areas. I took time out to listen again to both renditions here (Scotty's and Esh's playing). Again I am impressed mightily with the talents of these fellows.

And Esh -- you are so right -- it is very instructive to listen to the differences in output from the instrument combinations. Your setup is, to me, more "professional" in SOUND (and you are a hell of a good pianist). Scotty has a nice way of handling the soloing from a singer's position.

This is wonderful encouragement to those of us working hard to upgrade our skills.

cajun100: I too find it especially interesting to hear different people's versions of the same tune, and might be an opportunity for someone to host a sz member song project participation by coming up with a specific (popularly recognized & easy to play) song for everyone to record & share here. I remember this brought up a few years ago, but it kind of fizzled out. Anyone interested this time?

Tony Mads & Cajun100: Many thanks for listening, and for the kind words of support. Tony, still looking forward to your Italy trip inspired song, and Cajun100, hope to eventually hear a song from too. Welcome back home to the SF Bay Area, the best place on earth in my opinion, but I suppose I'm biased. - Scott

I wanted to add my note of thanks for the many kind comments as well.

Scott: I like the idea of a community project where everyone does their rendition of a particular song, but I think we've already started the ball rolling with our renditions of two Jobim classics, and we've provided the framework for the project: namely Antonio Jobim. This wonderful composer has left us a terrific legacy of great songs to choose from that can be interpreted in many ways (I currently do eight of his songs in my show), so rather than pin the project down to just one song I would suggest the project focus on this great bossa nova composer - a perfect summertime music project.

Scott and I have already contributed our Jobims... anyone else?

This approach might be a bit difficult for some players regarding Jobim songs....
I would suggest something very Popular & a bit Easier for ALL to play/sing as a foundation, But then add your own special twist to it to make it your own.

Ok, how about "Happy Birthday" or "Old MacDonald Had A Farm" ? These are about as globally recognizable (to all age groups) and as easy to play as it gets.
