The hiss is because of noisy mic preamps. Nothing gets rid of it, but lowering the HI EQ can mask it a little. Problem is - then the sound is dull. You just have to live with it, unless you want to carry a mic mixer and effects.

The more signal you can get out of the microphone the less gain you'll need on the PSR and then you'll get less hiss. A microphone pre-amp or any mixer with dedicated microphone inputs should improve the situation a lot. You'll get less total hiss because the pre-amp/mixer circuitry will generate lower noise than the circuitry in the PSR.

You could try a microphone transformer; however my experience with the (budget) unit in my possession was that the transformer was very susceptible to mains hum and so you got a hotter signal (so less gain and less hiss) but gained a hum which was even more noticeable.

The other possibilty would be a microphone with higher output than the SM58 (AKG?). But to get a microphone that is better than the '58 would cost more than a small mixer, so this doesn't seem like a very good idea to me!

I like the ElectroVoice 767. It produces a nice clean hot signal.

I need some advice, please. I want to buy a Sure Beta 58A mic and plug it into my PSR3000. What is the best way to go in terms of cables + converter from XLR to TRS or get a small mixer. Any feedback on the brand of cables / converter / mixer is appreciated. I am looking for the best possible sound. Thanks.

Sunny,

Try turning the Noice Gate on or off and see if this eliminates your hissing problem.

Oleg7,

The SM58A, according to DNJ, is an excellent mic and he's now using it regularly. As for the adapter cable, an XLR to 1/4-inch mono is the one that's needed. An XLR to 1/4-inch TSR will not work because the PSR-series of keyboards uses a 1/4-inch mono mic input--not balanced or floating.
