OMG!

This really comes as a SHOCK! as Ray Brown was scheduled to appear here next week (Yoshi's Nightclub, Oakland, CA) July 9- 14th and I had planned to catch his show with Phil Woods then. We have sadly lost another legendary master musician. - Scott

Scott .... when you see Phil Woods, ask him if he can't do anything about appearing at the Newport (RI) Jazz Festival ..... this thing is getting to be a parade of no-names ... (see my post under the Rosemary Cloonet thread.....)

Well. after 75 amazing years,He plays a gig, plays some golf, takes a nap, and passes away in his sleep. Not a bad way to live---not a bad way to go.

p.s.---I once got to fool around in a studio with a 16 track master of an unknown female singer with Ray Brown on bass. I soloed the bass and was blown away at the tone and power of a master musician with a fine instrument captured by a great microphone played back through pro studio monitors! I realized that I had never before really heard what a bass can be!

Hi Tony: I agree. With the exception of Arturo Sadoval, Oleta Adams, Issac Hayes, and James Carter, all the other musicians I've not heard of either. That certainly doesn't mean the others aren't talented though. It's obvious that many more all time legendary 'jazz' greats will be appearing at the 'North Sea Jazz Festival', further proof that europeans (& japan too) appreciate traditional american jazz more than americans. I think that here in america, commercial pop music rules. Yet another excuse for us jazz fans to plan a music trip to Europe.
