You can't "work" a head mic by getting closer or farther away from it.
Also, you can't turn away from it if you want to speak privately or sneeze.
However Eddie and Gary D. both use them effectively.

It has to be on the left. Why ?

Both of my hands tends to go toward left side of the keyboard. Left hand manual bass. Right hand plays comping chords which rarely goes to the higher octaves. Also, the fills, etc are on the left. So, most of the actions are definitely on the left side. That is why I put my mic there.

Ok guys, after having switched the position of my mic boom (since Dec 18th), with it now coming towwards me from my left side instead of right. At first it felt really weird, but I now feel a lot more comfortable performing with it this way, and for the very reasons UD and several others here have mentioned. I suppose my experiment demonstrates just what creatures of habit we really are, as well as proves my point that we're all 'capable' of adapting & adjusting to the differences between the weight (weighted/non weighted) & slight size (dimensions) differences of the keys of different brand/model keyboards as well . - Scott

Those of us that use headset mics, and are comfortable with them, discovered a new kind of freedom while performing that makes boom mics obsolete. However, there are some folks that cannot use them, mainly because of their singing techniques. In my case, it took a while to change the singing technique, but once that obstacle was overcome, I never looked back.

Cheers,

Gary

Left side---Why?

I play full chords with my left hand. When I sing, there are times when I play srong chords with my left hand and add just a touch with the right. Soooo,
My right hand has more freedom, it can do any mic adjusting I need. Or turn a page. Or, scratch. On my right side, that is.

As a guitarist I did the same thing. I could hold a chord down with my left hand and keep the sound going. My right hand could do very little without the left hand fingering. Again, my right hand adj. mic, turn pages, and scratched the right side of me. Also being right handed, I could wave to people easier.

I just bought a Apex stand--mic in the center?? Maybe. Hmmm!
