the 9000 can be fussy over which hd it will accept. If you have a program like partition magic or swiss knife and can hook the disk up to a pc try wiping all partitions and boot area, and then try format again. Or try fdisk in dos if this is possible.
I once had a measure of succcess by downloading the specific utility from the manufacturers web site for that particular hard disk which erased everything on the hard disk including all file allocation tables and boot sector and over wrote with zeros in a similar situation.
