Once in a while I get a few free hours to do something creative, and when that rare occasion comes along I have two options--go fishing, or in this case record some new MP3s.

The 7 new songs I recorded have been posted on my website , and all were recorded using Acid Pro 4.0, the PSR-3000 and a Crown CM-311-A headset mic. When I rendered them as MP3s for the site, it was done at the lowest possible level to facilitate faster downloading.

The same songs have also been placed on CDs, which will be mailed out to perspective customers. The CDs were burned at the best WAV level in order to achieve the highest quality and insure that everyone can play them. (Not everyone owns an MP3 player.)

I sincerely hope that some of you will listen to the MP3s, and please, provide some constructive criticism.

Thanks,

Gary

Gary,

I'm giving a listen now, sounds great... very nice balance with your smooth easy listening style, very professional sounding. 'Laura' has always been one of my favorites and the George Shearing is a perfect fit.

How do you feel the results are using Acid compared with GoldWave?

Thanks for sharing.

Glen,

Goldwave is an excellent program, however, it is not multi-track, therefore, you're limited to a one shot deal. I believe there is a new version available that is multi-track, which I believe would make it equally as good as Acid Pro-4.0.

Here's an interesting feature comparison study (chart) of the features included in the looped based dedicated audio only Acid Pro 5 software, compared with Cubase SX3 & Sonar 4, of which include full audio-midi production as well. Unfortunately Goldwave was not included in this comparison.

Thanks for the listen and the complements guys and gals. Today, I have an afternoon off and I'm going sailing on the upper Chesapeake Bay. Tomorrow, it's back to the grind stone and making music for lots of people.

Thanks again,

Gary

Nice job as usual, Gary ...
Were the backgrounds to "Beyond the Sea" and "Drinkin Champagne" preset styles or something you put together? Having originally been an accordion player I liked the style in "Drinkin Champagne".
Also ... did you take the background photo?

The bacgrounds to both were PSR-3000 presets, both of which I really like with a number of songs. The photo is a Windows ME wallpaper photo that came with the computer.

Tony Rome,

You won't believe it, but I had a couple broiled, backfin, lump-meat crabcakes for supper tonight--OH YEAH!

And, at supper tonight, the real boss (Carol) and I talked about the trip and making the reservations during the next few weeks. I'm really looking forward to heading to your neighborhood, meeting you and your lovely wife, and enjoying a week in sunny Cozumel.

Gary

Gary, I just listened to "Beyond the Sea"
and you did a first class job.
The only constructive criticism I can give,
is that the "s" and "sh" sounds might be
modified. Perhaps some EQ or De-essing could help.

Vquester,

Thanks, I guess I didn't notice it, but I should be able to take care of the problem with some minor EQ changes as your suggested.

Thanks again,

Gary

Hi Gary

I think your recordings came across rather well.

You mention an interesting point regarding the bit rate of the recording and the download time that I pondered for a quite a while.

I decided that if someone was actually interested enough to listen to my demos and they had a slow computer, that they would wait for a slightly longer download if needed.

I noticed a rather major difference between the quality of a low vs a higher bit rate in sound. I also heard some of my demos on another musicians computer/speaker system. His speaker system was not that great, it needed all the help it could get. I felt that to me it was more important to let people get as high a quality of sound as possible when listening to my variety of songs mostly because a lot of people don't even know that one person can sound like that and wanted as rich a sound as I reasonably could get. That's also the reason most of my demos are short having the few full length tunes marked with an asterisk.

I did find that to get the very best sound I first recorded at the higher rates of 24/48 and 24/96. Then without any editing I lowered it down to 16 bits. That alone did make a noticeable difference in the tone quality as it allowed more data to be included after I lowered it to 16 rather than just recording at 16.

I also noticed that most online demos that I heard that also sounded good to me were done at least at 192 k-bits for the mp3. I decided to go up one notch higher to make it a little better and not really affect the download time.

Just my current slant on it for my purposes.

Anyway, thanx for sharing your efforts with us.

Best
Scott
