Mine does NOT recognize my 20GB USB hard drive, but I didn't really expect it to. The thumb drives and the SM card work flawlessly.

I have used an IBM Microdrive 1Gb with no problem.

Uncle Dave - YOur hard drive probably does not work because it is formatted with NTFS. The USB device will only work with FAT format.

That could be it, thanx Mike! I don't need it .... but I tried to dump some files from it directly and couldn't.
I keep all my midi files on a 128MB SM card, and I have the USB drive for backup or transfers. I prefer the SM so it doesn;t have to get put in and out each showtime. The card just lives in there like a hard drive.

Good idea Dave. Sounds like the way to go for both midi and 3rd party style files as well. The USB drive sticking out the back of the keyboard works great, but I'm always afraid of bumping it and breaking the connector. Guess I'll pick up a SM card tomorrow.

You could also, like me, plug in a USB card reader/writer at the USB port. I have a multi-card one that allows me to use a SmartMedia card, Compact Flash (up to microdrive) and SD card, etc. Oodles of memories and can be sorted into different categories, e.g., Midi, Styles, Voices etc. for instant access. I also have the 128Mb SM card in situ at the front. For all of these I transfer files back and forth to and from my computer using the excellent Musicsoft Downloader program that comes from Yamaha free.

I intend to leave the SM card permanently in the slot and use a USB device as backup and to hold any obscure stuff that doesn't merit being held on the "main" storage.

On the other hand everything I consider as "main", "possible" or "only if someone slips me a tenner" stuff will all fit easily on a 128 meg SM card so perhaps my brain is getting overexited at the though of having so much capacity available directly (Owners of boards with in-build hard disc are allowed to smile smugly to themselves at this point).

Once again, I thank you!
