George is right.. You can choose which color you want the screen to be... It's done under the function button. I too didn't really care too much for the changing colors. In one of my reviews I stated that the red record screen really can throw your eyes off sometimes.. It jumps out at you. Especially if you've been playing in either voice or style mode with the blue screen. Your eyes get comfortable to that color, and then when you hit the record button, it screws with your eyes. Personally I loved the greenish color that was on the PSR-540. I thought that was a great back lighting. I was not happy to see it gone from the 550. However, one nice function of the 550 is that you can turn the backlight completely off if you're in a well let room and don't need it. That's a great feature because it will extend the life of the lights on the screen...
