Just a short demo of the Band In a Box 60sRock style that I tweaked for the Tyros 2. This was a one take recording and I may not have the song's progression down quite right.. but here it is anyway:

Thanks Donny. That may be more a function of too much mid high eq than anything else. I realize I do tend to go a little higher than some folks like on the eq, but I usually catch it and fix it when I master.

Thanks Rikki. I played around with the eq settings after, and it helped, but I agree with Donny too. Perhaps setting the whole drum track a bit lower would help.

If that doesn't get it, I like this style enough that I'll open it in XG works, select all of the cymbal parts, and drop the velocity on them a bit. It's easy and quick enough to do. All I have to do is click on the cymbal note in the piano roll and all of recorded cymbal notes will be selected. Then I can use the tool in XG works to reduce velocities for a group, and simply save it to style again.

Hi AJ,
I noticed when using some of the BIAB styles with my soundfonts, the crash cymbals were very loud.( I just adjusted the cymbal font), though I think in BIAB I would have actually had the option of adjusting the velocities of the individual drum instruments to suit my soundsource.

Will check into that when I get my psr as I wouldn't want to have to start editing sounds just to use with BIAB.

XG Works is brilliant. I gather you're using it in conjunction with Michael's stylemaker program to turn it back into a style??

Haven't really used XG Works in ages as I do most of my step editing in omb including changing velocities.
Must admit I've wondered if omb alters original psr styles with megavoices ie if they still sound the same if loaded in & resaved.

best wishes

You're right Rikki. On some of the styles the cymbals sound a little too loud vs the rest of the drums, but I was able to quick fix it by lowering the high EQ settings a little for the drums in the mixer.

I think it would be easier for me if I can alter the drumsets in the T2 and save them to user drums just for these styles.

AJ not a bad style at all. I agree with DNJ about the cymbal crashes towards the end, I was just getting into the groove and the cymbal pops up. Nice to see BIAB can be converted to .sty format.

Thanks T42. I think the cymbal thing is an easy enough fix. I went back to a few of the other styles I like, and found that some are just fine the way they are. I retweaked a few others and messed with the drum eq and levels a little. It seems to help a lot.

Out of the 800+ styles, I've found enough here that I'll want to use. I'll probably go through all of them at some point and simply eliminate the ones that don't sound good right from the get go. The rest I'll tweak and if further adjustments are needed I'll do them in XG works and stylemaker.

Rikki- XG works was a great product, but like most of their software endeavors, Yamaha pretty much orphaned it. The Windows XP update a few years back was the last I've seen for it, and if I remember right I think it happened only because enough users made enough noise about not being able to use the product on the platform.

I have no way to add an instrument file for The Tyros2, except probably to make it myself. Unfortunately, it isn't nearly as simple a task as making one for Cakewalk. If I remember right the Yamaha instrument files ( I think it's a .tbl file ) also need settings and parameters for midi controllers in order to function properly.

That said, it's midi editing abilities are still among the best out there. Too bad Yamaha stopped making and upgrading it.
