For you folks with DSL modems, it is EXTREMELY important to install filters on your phones between the phone and the wall jack. Not only that, you must ensure the filter is installed correctly. I found out my kids had removed the filters from their phones thinking it was some big brother listening device. My DSL performance dropped significantly. Once we re-installed the all the filters properly, my upload/download numbers skyrocketed back up.

So you need to treat those filters seriously.
