...hit 'em with THIS:

"Why it is that the concept of auto-accompaniment is terminally unhip, whereas the notion of retriggering backings that other people have produced (such as sampled loops) has become totally cool, is one of life's little imponderables."

(From a review of Yamaha 9000 Pro by Julian Colbeck)

This goes under the title of"Why didn't I Think Of That?"

Mostly because of how terminally un-hip most of the backing loops on arrangers are..... There are exceptions, but you probably can pick up a loop collection of jungle drumming, of hiphop beats that will beat the pants off of any contemporary arranger, for a fraction of the price.

The day any of the Big 3 come out with an arranger with seriously contemporary sounds and features and, especially, cutting edge styles is the day the arranger will get the respect it has earned.

That’s likely not going to happen anytime soon since the arranger keyboard is already perfectly marketed to the majority of the people who use them.

I have to agree with Sharp here .... arrangers are suited to the types of players. If one wants all the hip cutting edge stuff IMO they should buy a synth with an arp in it, for at least 1/3 to 1/2 less $ wise.

Actually that is the problem.

Arranger manufacturers are only marketing it to a very small group and not trying to expand their market.

Then they complain that the arranger market is too small and because of that, that is one of the reasons they have to have such high prices on arrangers.

If they would make arrangers with the traditional customers and the “hip” customers in mind, and also market arrangers to the “hip” market, then that should help expand the arranger market and help keep the prices down on arrangers.

But if they continue with their current ways arrangers would always have that high price tag and would not get the respect they should have.

Arranger manufacturers are one of the few manufacturers I know of that do not have a desire to increase their market share and thus increase their profits.

All that is saying is, because the styles and features best suit older music lovers, older music lovers buy them......

If they made them to suit younger musicians, younger musicians would buy them. They already buy Tritons and MotifES's like crazy because of the arpeggiators and little triggered loops, essentially crippled versions of what an arranger can do. The difference is the sounds and styles are cutting edge, NOT some older guy's re-interpretation of what might have been hip four years ago.....

Roland, Yamaha and Korg need to co-opt the voicing and loop teams from their workstations, and put them hard at work creating modern styles for modern arrangers, and the dissing will stop in its' track.....
