Trials of the system are being started here in Tasmania,Australia very shortly.
A joint venture with the goverment owned power company has been created.
If sucessfull it will break a monopoly by the largest telephone company which owns the land line telephone network in Australia.

Ken, the relatively low population density in Tasmania works to your disadvantage; the cost-per-subscriber of running cable is high (perhaps prohibitively), stifling competition. Therefore, BPL (Broadband over Power Lines) looks "promising". However, the greater average distance between users may or may not mitigate possible RF interference problems from BPL. It's going to be interesting to see the eventual outcome.
