Are these services generally adequate to post songs on ... for instance stuff I might record on my PC using my kb (and vocals) ? If so, how much can you generally put on one of these sites? ...
Also, how protected are they against hackers, viruses, etc.

my website is hosted by Tripod; both the web space and the bandwidth (i.e. the number of people who can download something from a website in a given amount of time) depend on how much you are willing to pay.
Free websites usually allow 25 Mb of space and a rather limited bandwidth, so if you post a new song and all your Synthzone buddies want to download it, your website will be temporarily unavailable. What I did was to start with the basic offer and then upgrade, paying a fee.
I have never had problems with hackers or viruses.

The amount of space varies with the ISP, ranging from 8 to 25 megs. If you're posting MP3s, most range 3 to 4 megs, so this will give you an idea how many you can put up at a time. You'll need an FTP program to post them, and there are some good ones available at no charge. If you need particulars on them, give me a call and I'll be more than happy to help you out.

As for protection against hackers, virus, etc, they must somehow obtain your user name and password in order to get into your site. It sometimes happens, as it did to some sites we frequent, but the incidence is rare. No site, however, is bullet proof.
