I don’t know if they have this already but what if they were to make keyboards with removable keys. Some thing where you can replace one set of keys for a different type. So if you are not satisfied with the keys on one KB, you can replace them with another one that you like.

For this they would have to start to make KBs that have the ability to plug in and plug out a set of keys. If you have a 61 key KB then that should have a removable key feature so if the key feel on that KB is not what you want, then you can replace it with another one. The same thing for 76 and 88 KBs. Kind of like changing the strings on a guitar. I don’t know what the physical design would be like but I am sure that can be worked out.

Maybe this might solve the key feel problem on KBs. Sometimes, I find that a KB sounds good and have the right features for me but the key feel is terrible.

What do you think? Have I gone over the edge or is this a bad dream. Feel free to add new ideas to this.

I was thinking the same thought a while back, you might be able to replace Roland keys with Casio keys, but you would not be able to replace Yamaha keys with Casio/Roland/Korg/Fatar because they wouldn't fit in the keyboard. Yamaha keys are slightly smaller over all.

P.S. Is it my imagination, the key feel on the new Casio WK3500 was exceptionaly good, even better then my Roland EM keys.

You could, however, replace the keys presently on the Tyros with the FS keybed that is on the Motif ES6 & 7, and that would be pretty awesome. I don't really understand why Yamaha didn't put the FS keybed in the Tyros since it wouldn't have cost that much more because it has been around ever since the DX7 and at this point should be fairly inexpensive to make.

I owned the Motif ES 7 briefly and my experience with the keys is that they were very similar to my Tyros keys in feel and action. Almost an imperceptible difference IMO.

I bought my Tyros almost a year after they first hit the market so maybe Yamaha improved the later produced Tyros with better action keys. I dunno. Just a thought. But they feel very similar to the Motif ES 7 keys which according to Yamaha is one of the best keybeds available in a synth and even used in some models of Korg's keyboards and I think even some Roland keyboards too. The Motif ES8 is hammer action and weighted so it is another animal altogether. But for non-weighted synth action keys the Motif ES 6/7 and Tyros seem to me almost identical in feel. Very close anyway.

If you do Live gigging and you play more than just piano voices then synth keys (not hammer action weighted keys) is the way to go IMO. Try playing a fast guitar solo or a fast trumpet solo with a hammer action weighted keybed keyboard and you'll know what I mean. Very impractical to say the least. Besides being very difficult to do, your fingers and hands and even your arms will start to get fatigued rather quickly.

Any way, back to the topic. The Tyros already has a very good key action and feel that is very similar IMO to the Motif ES 6/7. After owning the Motif ES7 and then playing my Tyros for the first time that was my initial reaction, ie., the key feel and action was very similar to the Motif ES7 keys.

Best regards,
Mike

I just think that key size should be some what standard. I think it would be good to be able to change keys depending on the style of music being performed at a gig. Especially since different sounds are being used and may require a slightly different key feel to get the effect needed. May be it is time for KBS to have somethings standard.
