In completing my latest, the last track #12. Turnabout was done strictly using my new Roland Fantom S 88, so you'll get a feel at least initially what it sounds like from my composing style.

Also worth a listen I think is cut #11. Snow And Roses again I played the mega guitars realtime and I think this one came out a bit better than "Mega Lies."

Terry, had a listen to both Turnabout and Snow and Roses.

Well, the S88 definitlely has a dynamic sound and presence to it. The music had a better 'flow' to it IMO and more depth. I listened to Turnabout first then Snow and Roses and I could immediately tell that the Tyros with its Style accompaniment sounded somewhat canned to me. I didn't notice a canned sound with the S88. Like I said, the S88 had a "more free flowing" sound.

It sounded like you were playing a Viola-(in the lower registers) or a Cello-(in the higher registers) along with your EP. It sounded very realistic. The EP sounded pretty good too but I couldn't get a very good feel for it in the song. The other sounds masked it a little. Which EP are we talking about on the S88? Sounded almost like a Newtines or Hypertines to me.

PS: The Mega Voice on Snow and Roses sounded only okay to me. I could almost sense your trepidation when playing it. And although there are a couple Mega Voices that are somewhat playable, do play them in a live situation would be next to impossible if not totally impossible. But I realize you don't Gig so trying to play and record them in your home Studio you could devote more time and effort into trying to get it just right. On the fly??, ie., "Live??" No way IMO!

BTW, that's a frown not a scowl.

I look forward to hearing more of your S88 sounds and songs Terry. They will not only give me but everyone else on the SZ Forum a better impression either positive or negative of the S88's capabilities and sounds. My first impression is a positive one.

Mike thanks for the listen and I have the same impression you came away with listening between the Tyros cuts and the Roland cut.

Even my wife commented how the whole thing sounded richer and fuller.

The EP is the Leo Rhodes and was meant to lay back in the cut to allow the cello to carry the tune, with the rhodes just filling some of the rhythm air space.

I like the sound quality of the Fantom S88 as well and your creation Turnabout. I like the mix of classical instruments with modern accompaniment. Snow and Roses did nothing for me.

Yeah, what Mike said. Congrats on the new board Terry, liked "Turnabout" much better than the other tunes----it had a meditative,trance-like quality. I have always found Roland sounds to have a richness and body beyond most of the other choices. I really liked the original Fantom, but I was somewhat alone in that. The drums are outstanding, and that is a "biggie" with me. And about the acoustic guitars, well at Sam Ash I heard some guy getting these amazing dobro-like sliding chord sounds out of a Fantom, and he was really pounding on the keys. I do think that there is a lot of nuance programmed into the dynamics, and that the player has to discover how to bring it out. Have fun, Bro.

Is this the future trend? Arrangers for the rythym..and a good Synth for the lead sounds?
or is this a manufactureres way of making people buy both?....just a thought?

I agree with you Don, I hope this is not a trend, and that Roland will bring an arranger on the market to match it's suprb sounds.

Thanks for the listen and words. I too agree. "Turnabout" to me sounds more composed piece by piece. There seems to be an open fuller quality about it. My wife thinks it sounds richer and more real, that it has better space and presence.

I think I was ready in composing to move to where a workstation can take me. I'm not dumping my Tyros for sure, the sounds are too good, but I think it will become more of a sound palette in my work now as opposed to the basic compositional board.

FWIW, I didn't care much for the original Fantom either but like the S.

Kind of my approach too Donny.. PA80 / 2k for the rythym.. Motif / soft synth / samplers for the lead instruments. Sometimes I go back and redo the bass and drums on the Motif though too.. especially if I want to draw a little attention to them in a mix.

I'm not sure that the manufacturers ( especially Yamaha ) are connecting arranger players and workststation / synth players though. Still feels like they want to make a huge distinction between them.
