Tony's great. Makes me think of my B 3 days. I get a little nostalgic until I remember how much they weigh. I hauled one around for several years in the 70's. Nothing on God's earth sounds like one.

Ah, Winston Walls. He played around Lexingon on and off in the 70's-early 80's...a really loud, take control dynamo. We worked at Up Jump the Devil and O'Keef's as a trio and worked opposite each other after hours at Comers and The Sportsman. He occasionally made structure errors (occasional questionable changes), but made up for most of it in pure force, magnatism and power. Heard from a mutual friend that he's been having some health problems.

My only problem with the Jack McDuff deal is, Jack was older and more established than Winston and Winston approached that Philladelphia deal as an out-an-out war...no respect for McDuff, and I thought he really deserved that.

Winston is an old school "cutting session" kind of guy, and those sessions can be brutal!

Winston had no finess at all...but got more out of a B-3 than anyone I ever heard live, including Jimmy Smith.

What a character!

Re: Winston Walls

I saw Winston playing in a smoky little bar near Punta Gorda, Florida a few years ago. However, he was playing 2 digital keyboards and not the B3. He was quite good. During a break we chatted for awhile and he lamented the fact that not many venues wanted to hear him on his B3 and so he went where the money was. He was selling an of him on the B3 which I bought.

That "Paesanos" CD is a lot of fun ... especially the "Oh, Marie" cut ... sounds like a real Italian party ...

Back around 1980 I happened to be in Chicago
during a jazz festival ... Gerry Mulligan and his big band were appearing at the hotel I was staying at ... I paid FIVE BUCKS to hear them perform and the room was only half full ... the next night I walked into a club and The Jimmy Smith Trio was playing .. NO COVER CHARGE !!! It was GREAT !!! ...

It's ALL ABOUT THE MONEY !!!
