PSR 2000:
What is the timing resolution in ppq of the sequenser?
96 would be OK ?
192 would be fine ?

Hi Kris: EXCELLENT question indeed! I think a sequencer's 'Timing resolution' is one of the (often overlooked) KEY ingredients to 'fully' capturing and accurately recording realistic sounding accomp patterns. No matter how great the musicianship of the person who recorded the accomp patterns is, it will always be limited by the sequencer's ability to capture all the timing nuances (timing resolution) of the original performance.

I believe a hardware sequencer 'timing resolution' (quantize OFF) of 96ppq (parts per quarter note) is really not good enough. Software sequencers (Cakewalk Sonar, Logic Audio, and Cubase) support timing resolutions of over 960+ ppq. Unfortunately most arranger keyboards (both song & pattern sequencer sections) only support 96ppq, and sometimes, 192 ppq. 192 is certainly better than 92, but my little portable Yamaha QY70 hardware sequencer supports 482 ppq, so it certainly should be easily possible for the arranger keyboard manufacters to GREATLY improve the timing resolution on their arranger boards too. Arranger keyboard manufacters: I Hope you're reading this!

I checked the PSR2000 manual and can't seem to find 'timing resolution' (both pattern & song sequencer) specs listed. Perhaps George Kaye could find out for us. :; I also wonder what the 'timing resolution' on the PSR9000 & 9000pro are.

Are you ready?
on PSR2000 the timing resolution is: 1920ppq.
Go into Event edit mode, and you will see 01:01:0000 . the last 4 digits is ppq. It goes from 0001 to 1920.

Yes, but at least it's a "WONDERFUL" waste.

Seriously, I am AMAZED that the timing resolution is THAT high. WOW. Is this 'for real'? I would have been happy with a 480ppq timing resolution on a hardware type sequencer. 1,920ppq certainly matches the 'timing resolution' of the VERY BEST midi software sequencers on the market today. I'm really surprised that Yamaha hasn't used this as a BIG selling point in their marketing campaign. Does BOTH the PSR2000's 'style pattern sequencer' and 'song sequencer' sections support this incredible 1,920 ppq 'timing resolution'? If so, this has really 'made my day'.

Krix has used his brain!
1920 is impossible (I think/guess).
It should of course be 192 ppq.

WOW! 1,920ppq?? Are you guys sure this is right? Not saying it's a bad thing because 1,920ppq is beyond awsome. Are you sure it's not 192ppq? I agree with you Scottyee that if this is true then Yamaha should have advetised this as a selling point. It just seems odd to have a sequencer that has such tight timing and not use that as an advertised selling feature. I also can say that Yamaha does add some really good features to their keyboards, and yet they don't advertise them.. For example, I used to own a Yamaha EX-7. Well this keyboard had the ability for independent loop settings for ALL of its sequencer tracks.. Each track could have a different loop point. Now that's a HUGE selling feature for any keyboard.. The only other board I know that did this was the Triton, yet Yammie failed to advertise this.. Which is odd because the EX series was in direct competition with the Triton. It would be really nice if the PSR-2000's sequencer had 1,920ppq.. I really don't know of ANY keyboard out there with such a high ppq setting (not even the top synth workstations by Yamaha, Korg, and Roland) It's confusing though, isn't the ppq setting for the 9000 pro less than 1,920ppq? If so why would Yamaha have such a huge setting in the PSR-2000 and not add a great feature like this to its top arranger?

Yes I am 100% sure. Because I had it infront of my eyes. And I remember how long I had to turn the data dial to move a note from 1920 to 0... :-)
PSR2000 users, go into Step Record mode... and you will see the time marker as
01:1:0000

for others... download the manual and look on page no 96.
it says right there
4/4 1920PPQ
and then you see the marker as
01:1:0000

this is awesome.

Hi Shakil,
YES, you are RIGHT. I just checked page 96 and 97 of the PSR2000 manual and the display DEFINITELY reads 1920PPQ. This means that the PSR2000 is capable of the finest timing resolution of any hardware sequencer I've ever heard of. WOW, this is totally AWESOME! The arranger keyboard competition better WATCH OUT!
