Arno's solution is the only, very best and safest one : Two totally independent (not connected electrically) switches.
Chris and Eric's are pretty risky.... it's like connecting 2 mains power-chord leads to each other without knowing what the voltage and frequency is

(e.g. EU has 230V/50Hz and US have 115V/60Hz)
It is possible in instrument A the 'tip' of the jack is Ground, while in instument B the 'tip' is connected to Ground.
The signal-levels/polarity differences can cause severe damage in instruments.
