I havn't done this in a long while ....but I was trying to record a song on the psr3000 quick record.....then when I play it back on my PC it sounds terrible....sounds weird....wrong instruments assignments etc etc ....Is there a way to record a song on the 3k and have it play as a General SMF.....or do I have to do it in the sequencer instead of quick record or? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Donny,
don't think it will work. You're using an xg based keyboard with megavoices, articulated voices etc etc & trying to play it back on a General midi soundsource, it would sound terrible.
Any particular reason you want it as gm?
I always have my psr midied to my pc if I want to hear anything played back that has anything to do with th psr, including styleworks & omb for style editing.

Michael ( midiplayer??) has got free software program that will convert to gm, but it's still not going to sound as good as the original. http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software.htm
best wishes

donny

if u just record your playing in realtime on the keyboard and save that to a usb thumb drive / SM card, when u open it on the pc it will be a complete midi file with all the channels correctly laid out. u can then edit as much as u want...

does this cover what u are asking for?

It figures that Yamaha would screw things up and create problems regarding SMF recording & playback...like I said its been a very long time since I tried to record SMF songs on a PSR....no big deal..I could always record a Wav or use a Roland KB for the best SMF sound.

Thanx for your help everyone

Donny,

Think about this.. the Keyboards we play have advanced so far in twenty years. The "general midi" standard remains just as it was twenty + years ago. You can't have SA and megavoices amongst many other advancements that run on an antiquated standard without something having to "give". If you worked with drum soft synths, for example, you would immediately notice just how "not" standard midi implementation has to be in order for the articulations in a multisampled drum kit to function properly. Try playing back a midi file that was made using an add on DR008 kit with the kit from EZ drummer for example, and you might be amazed at how much it doesn't work, yet both are made by the same company. Heck you can do it with 2 different DR008 kits too.

I think it's possible that either Michael P Bedesem or Jorgen may have written some software that will help eliminate the extra midi messages required by the current Yamaha technology, but I don't think these will help if the problem is in the mapping of the drum kits.

Regards,

AJ

Can the track volumes on pre-recorded SMF played in the 3000 be changed and saved, using the 3000? Cannot figure it out.

Thanks,
zuki

The GM Standard was updated to GM2 in about 2000 to take into account the latest technologies that were available, therefore one can assume GM3 is being worked on which will address the current limitations of GM2. (Don’t forget Midi itself came out about 1983/4, (With GM standard about 1990) and if you compare it to GM2 it looks very primitive)
Enjoy whatever you play

That's true Bill, so I stand corrected on that, but even GM 2 is kinda limited considering the advancements in technology since 2000 and more than a few ( post 2000 ) modules and apps out there still don't utilize it or use their own varations anyway.

Drum apps and the unique mappings from manufacturer to manufacturer are probably the most difficult obstacles to overcome.

Drum mapping aside, it is pretty much impossible for me to write a song on an arranger and then transfer each midi part to a different module without having to do a large amount of tweaking. Even with the most common effects, reverb and chorus, and common controllers, each module varies enough that I prefer utilizing an arranger for very basic ideas to get a start ( chord progressions, basic rythyms etc ). Once I have an idea where I want to go, I find it's more productive for me to simply start from scratch in FL or Sonar.

On the other end of it, it took quite some time and effort to be able to make my soft arranger work for me on stage. It does indeed work, and well enough that I could use it any time if I really had the need to. That said, I find it to be simpler and therefore relaxing to just play off of the Tyros 2 or PA80 live. Much less to think about and while perhaps the lead instrument sounds aren't quite as "authentic", they are close enough that it I'd rather be relaxed and more focused on the music itself and entertainment. Much of that goes right back to the complexity of making Yamaha ( or Korg ) styles sound excellent on other modules.
