Anyone work on 9/11?

I did..and it was really a different kind of night.

My Wednesday crowd was smaller than usual and it seemed that those that came, came to talk.

Even on the dance floor, couples stopped and talked to other couples. Many came up to chat with me between songs.

The mood was rather somber and the usual schtick which gets crowds going did not work on this fateful anniversary.

The conversations I heard were not about 9/11... all THAT had been discussed to a fare-thee-well on TV all day.

I got the distinct feeling those that came, came to enjoy the comfort of their friends. The music was incidental.

At the regular closing time, they did not leave and I did an extra set of mild, "conversational" music.

Finally the boss gave me the cut sign because his staff was going on overtime. It was a very different kind of evening.

I worked my regular job. Actually it was almost "business as usual". I think the people there had seen enough tv and wanted to get away for awhile.

I decided not to work. I convinced my new client in Trenton to start Wednesdays NEXT week. It's still to close to me, to try and make a party night. Just can't ... not this year. My other spot usually has that dreaded "K" word on Wednesdays, and we went dark there too. Quiet reverence, and conversation was just fine for the evening.
I expect to work next year, but who knows? rememebr - I have tovisit pretty little Fiona and take nother picture as she grows into her tee shirt ! I'll try to post this year's shot soon.
