A lot of us start with sequencing a song using the good sequencer that sk/wk series provide. Everybody knows they are the best in sequencing in the market.
Then for those who do professional work, move that sequencing to a software sequencer. I use Cubase to do midi sequencing. There are several ways to do it. You can either save the song as a midi file in SK and then open that midi file in Cubase. Or you can simply record it directly from Sk to Cubase. So far so good.
While working with cubase, you want to set the clocking of SK to external while the you want to select the sounds of SK from Cubase.
That means you need to save a special "SONG PERFORMANCE" where Cubase is the controller and SK is the slave. In that song performance,
1) Adjust Every single track so that it will play from either the SK keyboard or from external midi. You know SK "lingo":
- Track ICON: "key-play" "mute" "seq-play"
So you want to make each TRACK as "KEY-Play". NOT "mute" and not "seq-play" EVEN.... if there is nothing recorded in the song!!!!!!!!
2) for recording ONE track from SK to Cubase, you want to adjust the midi configuration so that all the "key-icons" (from the midi) configuration window are muted EXCEPT for the one sound you are recording. So that the other tracks CAN ONLY play from MIDI IN and not from playing the keyboard. In other words, you do not want the keyboard to play 16 instruments one you are actually recording one flute. But the same time, you want the keyboard to play the sequence from Cubase that is coming through midi in.
Here is the problem:
SK SONG PERFORMANCE does ..... NOT.... save 1.
Here is how it saves them:
a) If there are sequencer data for a particular track, it will set the icon to "SEQ-play" by default regardless of the fact that you want it "KEY-play" and you saved it in performance as so.
b) If there are no sequencer data for a particular track, it will set the icon to "MUTE" by default regardless and despite... etc.
-----------------------------------------
So let us try to do that using KEYBOARD performance and not a song performance. So basically, you are in a song, you are in a regular keyboard performance.
1) the first thing is to set the muli-keyboard mode to "MULTI".
2) you set all track icons to "key-play" as described above.
3) you set all midi configuration for each track as described above.
4) Save it in a performance.
Problems:
1) There are several tracks that are affected the split point. The tracks that are supposed to be "left" performances for auto-accompaniment will only play on LEFT of the split point and Vice Versa for the "right tracks". This is not an acceptable when you want to use the keyboard as slave to external sequencer.
2) For some reason or another, some how and somewhere, the last 8 tracks.. which are normally used for auto-accomp... SWITCH icon from "KEY-play" to special "SEQ-play"... IN fact, it is "STYLE-play".
-------------------------------------
One more thing... I found out that Styles also MODIFY some of the sounds and the precussions and save these modifications in STYLE performance. So that, if you record a STYLE to a SONG and then CHANGE the default SONG performance, you LOSE these modified sounds.
The work around is basically to save the modified sounds as "new sounds". Then everything is good.
Any inputs or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
