I play a Yamaha Psr 8000...amongst other things..

This board (as far as instrument choices and voices go) basically has an orchestral selection, There's a couple of stack and crunch guitar selections, couple of jazz guitar renderings and a few others under the "XG" designation.

Synthesizer voices are fairly generic.

Nice board and I've had a ton of fun with it.

But I have to ask...as far as arranger boards go are there any out there that have a more rock n'roll, blues, pop sound selection built in?

Korg? Roland?

Also in your opinion, which is the most reliable board out there right now? (Customer backup, parts, breakdowns etc.)

The psr8000 style selection is a little basic and cheesy. Great for highschools and child prodigys into Beethoven or anyone who loves soft and light rock.

I spend hours replacing voices, drum kits etc. and tailoring the styles to my liking and effect.

Thoughts?

If I were in your shoes I would be taking a good look at the Tyros2. Lots of great onboard voices and styles, plus more third party styles than all the others combined.

Just my perspective,

Gary

There's the Yamaha Tyros2 and the Roland G70 for starters...also the new Roland E-80 and the Korg PA-800.

These are all fine keyboards with plenty of newer styles and great sounds...each one has slightly different strengths and weaknesses.

If at all possible, you should play these keyboards, and rely on your own ear in judging what's best for you.

I used to own a PSR-8000...a great keyboard in its day, but technology has moved on, and there are many wonderful new instruments from which to choose.

Ian

Hi Ian
I am a great lover of word and languages and just noticed your signature. I had no idea what it said.......then came Google!
Isn't Google fantastic!
Top of the page there was the exact phrase.

"One door never closes, but another opens"

Thanks Google and thanks Ian for adding another item to my education.
Incidentally, I just wonder why you have written Gaelic? Care to give us the reason?

cheers
Eddie Johnson

Hi Eddie,

I don't want to take away from this thread too much, but my adopted father's people were descendants of Roddie "the Piper" Mac Neill of Barra, Scotland.

They moved to a little community on Cape Breton Island called Washabuct(also spelled Washabuck), in Canada in the early part of the 19th century.

When I was growing up,Gaelic was spoken liberally in my home, and this was a phrase my Dad used often... it is a proverb which I apply in my own life.

Because it was becoming a dying language, there were several societies in my area that were formed to preserve Gaelic, and there is even a college where it is taught as an immersion language.

I came across some of my Dad's notes a few weeks ago, and this was scrawled across the top of one...no doubt as some form of inspiration...it's a proverb I use often in my own life.

Both my parents died while I was in my 20's, and these small remnants of my heritage have become precious to me.

I regret not having learned Gaelic, and I can only speak and write a few phrases, and when I hear it spoken, I am immediately transported back to my younger years, and a simpler time.

Thanks for your interest, and my apologies to Krychek, for breaking the continuity of this thread.

Ian

Out of the box, Korg has the best rock and blues patterns out there. The lead guitars are amazing, and the drums are usually right on the mark for rock.
For me, unfortunately, I play a small percentage or rock and blues, so I use the Yamaha line. More generic, more "family" styles.
No offence to anyone who disagrees, just one man's opinion.

Thanks Ian for your explanation which I found most interesting.
I am sure that Krychek will forgive us for this short OT.

Dave, you're certainly right about the Korg. As you probably read, I just got the G800, and some of the Blues, R&B and Rock are outstanding.
Of course in today's world, all of the styles from all of the keyboards are available if you put in the work.
I can make a case for the G70 and the Tyros2, in addition to the Korg. I would have no reservations about any of these three, except for the heavy weight of the G70.
One other thing about the Korg is is that it's extremely editable and you can customize it to your heart's content. All the factory styles can be replaced with your own if you wish.
