What exactly is this? Does this have arranger functions or do you have to use software?

It's not an arranger.

But you can run arranger software programs on it and emulate an arranger.

What software does as good a job (realtime) as a good arranger keyboard? Anything for a Mac?

None of them work as well as a good arranger keyboard, IMO. Setting up is not user friendly. Getting good quality XG voices that will work well with Yamaha styles is a challenge. Once it is setup, it works reasonably well, recommend a 76 key controller. I am not aware of arranger software that will work with a Mac.
All of the above is my opinion only. I find the software challenging, others do not.

Try this thread which covered software arrangers extensively...

Exciting prospect. I definitely think that a Neco type (soft synth) arranger is the direction that Arranger Keyboarding will be taking, but until they perfect the system to support easy on the fly navigation & access, and software stability (no crashing) hardware based arrangers will rein. I give it 3 years before considering a soft synth arranger keyboard like the Neco. - Scott
