Ok! Lets fire it up.

After reading recent discussions, I thought it is my time to give my 2 cents worth.

As you know I am a member since 1999 and know you guys for a very long time.
Some of you even in person.

That is why I'm starting a new threat.

I think with all the discussions lately we have ALL forgotten some major points in why some people by one brand over another, which is style of music you play, midi vs styles, features you need, which instruments you have played before and need in a keyboard etc....

Lets start with Fran since he took some heat recently.
If you know him, you know that he uses a lot of SMFs in his performances plus you would know what kind of music he plays.
That beeing said you would know that the G-1000(Roland) is the best choice for him. End of discussion.
We all know that Roland is one of the best KB's for SMF playback.
In his hands the G-1000 sounds great.

Next would be Scott: He plays mostly Jazz with rootless chords, which are a MUST in a KB, and uses just styles.
He is trained in Classical/Jazz Piano style.
Therefore after doing his homework the T2 is the best for him. End of story.
In his hands the T2 sounds great.

Just 2 examples.
I was traind in Guitar first and I never liked ANY Guitars in a KB until the T2 came around.
Saxes and Horns are important to me too.
I never had a B3 and don't know what it supposed to sound like.
So not so important to me.
I was always somewhat happy with the organs in my KB.

Some of you have played Sax or Bass before, which will influence your music.
I play only styles even though I have some killer Midis made for the Tyros and the T2 specifically by Yamaha.
I play Rock, Pop, Disco/Dance.
The styles need to be generic for me so they can fit a large number of songs.

Some of you are playing Dixie, Swing and BigBand mostly like PaulC.
That will influence the kind of KB he would by.
Being an old Ketron guy, the Ketron sounded great in his hands(when he owned one )

Again depending on the TYPE of music you play, what instrument you have played before and what instruments you prefer in a kb will greatly influence your choice and what you are looking for in a KB.
Thank God that there is more than one Company out there to fit our needs.

Isn't this what this forum is all about?
At least it used to be when I joined.
How can you say that a KB is crap when you don't know the background of the person and his KB you are attacking and his style of playing?

Thank God, a musician with ordinary commonsense. A keyboard needs to fit the individual and their playing preferences and abilities, therefore there is no such a thing as the perfect or proper keyboard that suits all.

Hi Eric, because you mentioned me in this thread, I think it IMPORTANT to point out that I (for one) have NEVER made comments that 'my Tyros2 keyboard is better' than anybody elses, or put down the competition as inferior. I've ALWAYS stressed that Tyros2 just fits my 'individual personal' needs best. In fact, as far as my opinions expressed about the Roland G70, I gave it high praises for its features I most appreciate (esp excellent key feel and navigation, and sounds (except for the excess reverb I heard, even with os2). The only qualities about it that don't fit my personal needs are it's less than portable size & weight, lack of jazz chord recognition, and swing styles which (to me)sounded too reimiscent of my former arranger: the RA800.

I think 'the way' I express my views are in sharp constrast to the words expressed by a couple of the Yamaha detractors here who (in my opinion) unfairly SLAM Tyros2 as: an overpriced "Toy R Us" toy, cheaply made, and only (perhaps) acceptable for an amateur hobbyist, & not suitable for a REAL PRO player. Being a PRO Player myself, I take this as an insult, because I (and many other pros here who play Tyros2 professionally) have proven otherwise. I respect everyone's personal opinion, but I just consider 'those types' of remarks to border on personal attack. Peace. - Scott

The reason why I put you in this threat as well as Fran is not to point fingers.
I put you and Fran, as well as Paul and myself in this threat, because I think of you as an individual and proffessional with individual needs which I clearly stated above.
So I'm rooting FOR you not AGAINST you.

I'm a little dissapointed. You should know me by now after all our lenghty discussions.
I'm a peacemaker and stand behind YOU as well as FRAN, for reasons mentioned above.

The title of the threat is meant to be ironic.

It's time that we put our little quarrals aside and focus on music and what brought us here in the first place.

Again I'm behind you buddy.
There is no fingerpointing in this threat and no reason to defend something that is not there.

Hi Eric, believe me, I KNEW all along, and continue to appreciate, that you & I stand on the same side of this issue, but simply felt I needed to CLARIFY my position, particularly to newer members (like Diki) who've expressed (perhaps rightly so) anger at certain Yamaha owners for Roland(?) bashing, as expressed on this

and that I too, don't condone bashing other people's personal keyboard purchasing choices either. Eric, like you so well said, we all simply have different needs & requirements.

Hi Eric, I could not say it better, reading your message is as reading my own thoughts.

Eric, what a great post, I love it, it’s filled with common sense. That says a lot
about you.

Some of my thoughts;
1- “If you can be offended – you will be offended”
Lot’s of wisdom in that.

2-There are so many different personalities on this forum – and that what makes it interesting.

3-Within the group you will find the agitator – the opinionated – and the softies.

4-We all post to help others and to edify ourselves.
5-I do not like the bashing that occurs but if not taken seriously it does add to the forum. When you realize that none of us knows it all and that the opinions are just opinions and not facts, the rest is easy to take.

6-As for my friend Scott Yee, people bash to get a reaction form others – you are far too much a person/professional to give in to the a kind of thing. I would love to see you smile when the bashing comes – because you know who you are. Hmmmmm!

7-And Fran, keep being exactly who you are it makes the forum interesting. I’m betting you’re noting but a big loveable pussycat.

8-As for me I’m fairly new to this forum most of my posting has been on the Technics forum. My career as a professional musician has supported four children and a wife in my first marriage and two children and a wife in my second marriage. I have played in the best places in New York and Long Island, I have had spots on TV and I have played for the Mayor of N.Y.C.
My ability lead my group with my guitar and lead vocals has brought me enough to be very comfortable financially. I HAVE DONE IT.

Does that give me the right to say I know? NAW, no way. I just know what I know for me and I try to share my knowledge with humility.

Wow, how many times must we rehash the same old theme; we get it....you own the keyboard you do because a) "it meets your particular needs" or b) it's all you can afford right now. More often than not, it's probably "b". And yes, having your resident SMF-playing, bash-everything, "know-it-all", cyber-bully, may occasionally liven up the forum, but few of us would seek this person out as a personal friend. In the end, the people we respect most (on the forum) are the REAL musicians, those with TRUE humility who don't need to tout their accomplishments. I say, put everyone on this forum in a room with just a Steinway grand and duct tape over their mouths and see who emerges. Perhaps as a follow-up, we could put the same group in a room with just a bullhorn and a big button labeled "SMF PLAYER" and see who emerges.
