In continuation of The Accordionist's thread, I would like to ask all of you Synthzone friends, what would be an appropriate "entry level" fee I can charge for studio work?

I'm a keyboardist who has done a couple studio work before..one CD which I freelanced as the keyboard filler (used in some TV ads and stuff) and another one was a full casette of gospel/music for a missionary, I did the whole 12 songs in that cassette with my trusty 'ol KN5000.

I can read Chords lead sheet...otherwise my reading is not too great, BUT my hearing is good enough that I was able to land my CD project with a local Pro musician.

I'm thinking of marketing myself as a freelance keyboardist, or working on local cable background music and stuff..I have my Triton Studio and KN6000 (soon I may change to a newer keyboard-Tyros or KN7000 depending on price).

How much is a modest (but not too modest) price I can charge??

KN,
What I will say about studio musicians in my experience. Every "true" studio musician, I found to be the best of the best. Meaning, they could read, improv., had the best chops, regardless of genre or style. And when you say to them, no, no what I want is....they can do it. This is pretty much true of the backup musicians I have seen over the years that hire out when a big name comes to town and they are hired to play what they are told to.

My point is, IMO one has to be pretty good to bill themselves as a studio musician. With that being said, the next thing to do is call the local musicians hall, tell 'em you're going into the studio and want to know what a backup keyboardist would cost per hour then price yourself accordingly.
