This one's a little off topic but... here's a piece of song lyric trivial trite that I never understood:

One song I perform which is always extremely popular with the crowd is the classic Van Morrison tune "Brown Eyed Girl". I love performing this tune with vocalizer & audience participation, but I never could figure out the line:

What ever happened, Tuesday's so slow

I always prefer to sing it as:

What ever happened to: 'days so slow'

This just makes more lyrical sense to me. The song is about reminiscing over your coming of age innocence days (first love). I realize that the orginal lyrics talk about Tuesday, but is there something special about that day of the week which makes it particularly slow? I lprefer to use the word 'days' instead, because it encompasses that complete time period, not just Tuesdays. Interested in hearing other people's take on this. Maybe I can be enlightened. - Scott

Scott,

I've never figured out that one either but I haven't really cared. Many lyrics make no sense. As much as I loved him some of John Lennon's lyrics are impossible to figure out. Sometimes I figure the lyrics are only there to get the vocal part into the music.

I've seen a couple of different versions of the third verse. I really don't know which one is right. The one that seems to make sense meter-wise makes no sense to me lyric-wise.

The song is a definate seller.

Scott,
Use my rule: If you are the ONLY singer, then it's GOT to be right - whatever you sing. Call it poetic licence, call it originality, whatever - all they hear is the Shaa Laa Laa part anyway.

Scott sing whatever you want, no body cares out there or is scrutinizing your lyrical content. I often sing the line in Elvis's "The Wonder of you"........ "You give me hope and CONSTIPATION" :>) .....your the pilot have fun with singing, I do!

But I think that 'WAS' the actual line Elvis used when he performed it live (I'm pretty sure I saw this on a tape of one of his final concerts). Who's the copycat? heehee :P

As a Van freak, I must contribute!
Scott, did you know that the original radio version of Brown Eyed Girl edited out the line "makin' love in the green grass" and replaced it with a line from an earlier verse.
As for meaning in Van songs, well, good luck!
Chances are he improvised most of it on the spot!
I agree with freddynl's explanation of why Tuesday is "so slow", although the Easybeats disagree. In Friday On My Mind they felt that Thursday "goes too slow".

The lyrics probably did make sense to the artist who was writing them. They probably did know what it was about.

Hi Scottyee,
My wife sings alto with me. She's always correcting me because I don't sing the same words that is written in the song.
She says "Nobby I can't read your mind"!
One thing about the vocal harmonizer it follows you know matter what you say!
But I can't get it to sound as good as when she sings with me! No way!
all the best,
Nobby

Thanks

MC:

I don't have a published chart for this, but it's a real easy song to learn (by ear) as it only uses 4 chords - I, IV, V7, & VI:

Here how I play it (in F):

verse:
| F | Bb | F | C7 |
| F | Bb | F | C7 |
| F | Bb | F | C7 |
| F | Bb | F | C7 |
|Bb | C7 | F | Dm |
|Bb | C7 | F | C7 |

(do you remember when we used to sing . . . part):
| C7 | C7 |

(sha la la la la la ... part):
| F | Bb | F | C7 |
| F | Bb | F | C7 | F | C7 (turnaround) |

have fun - Scott

Hi mc,
Try this site, (actually I know they have it because I checked!) http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/tab.html

It is meant for guitar but they usually have a few versions of songs and different chords/ keys depending on the song. I find it very useful.
Hope it helps
