Hi there!

My wife and I got the Canadian permanent residency early this year. We haven’t spent much time in Canada since then, because we have already signed the contract with the cruise line that currently work for. Our contract will end with the middle of September when we will go back to Toronto. My request for you people, is some guidance regarding jobs and gigs in Canada/Toronto. Are music associations/organizations any good? Where to advertise our act, rates for weddings, parties… you know … the kind of stuff that someone new must know.

Hi Flavie,

I'm in Toronto but my main source of income is my studio. I haven't played live in ages. Nothing serious anyway.
But as far as organizations I used to be a member of Toronto Musicians Union. Wasn't really worth it at first but it turned out to be quite useful for meeting a lot of musicians and people that have anything to do with music/entertainment business around here.

Would be awesome if I knew a booking agent or two to help you out but I haven't been in touch with any that I used to know in a long time. I have a couple of friends that gig all the time. I'll ask them for some advice and perhaps even contacts.

Don't worry too much though. As far as I know anyone with enough talent and desire to work were able to make it here.

Thanks a lot for your support! Now I know why everybody is saying that Canadians are always very nice and helpful. Hey, the think with the weather sounds great. Maybe in about ten to fifteen years form now, we’ll get the same weather like in Southern California ;-).

Hi Flavie,

If you're out west, Vancouver has a pretty decent scene going on. I'm in Edmonton and, unless you're country-oriented, you'd might be struggling a bit. Same goes for "Cowtown" (Calgary).

Coming from the U.K. originally, I've found Canadian audiences to be more, what shall I say, er, more 'reserved' in their appreciation.
