Though the remainder of the month is wall to wall, back to back Christams parties, I had yesterday and today off from the music biz. Therefore, after finishing my newspaper columns, I spent a few hours getting the Z-5500 ready for the road. Here it is, step by step for the completed project. 1. A front and read satellite speaker is mounted side by side on each stand. They can be swiveled to provide a broader coverage of the audience. 2. The stands are heavy-duty, chrome plated steel and telescope to approximately 6 feet. (About $25 each at the local music store) 3. All of the satellite speakers and control pannel are mounted on a plywood platform and held securely in place with industrial strength Velcro. 4. The platform fits snuggly in a heavy-duty duffel bag that has a carrying strap and zipped, side storage compartment for wires and wireless remote. 5. The finished product, rigged and ready to play. As you know the Tyros has no speakers. I use the Z-2200s at home and for small jobs like nursing homes and private parties. I still also play in a 5 piece dance band (two trumpets, tenor sax, drums and me on keys and bass). We mic one trumpet, the sax, and me on vocals. I was thinking of getting a small Behrenger mixer and the Z-5500s and running both systems for medium size solo and small to medium size band jobs. What do you think? Do you use your internal speakers in conjunction with the Logitechs? Since I have no internals I thought of using both systems instead.
At present on band jobs I carry a Yamaha powered mixer (it is heavy and awkward to carry), two Trainor 15" cabinets, two old Peavey cabinets each containing dual 10" speakers. I would like to lighten things up and scale down the size.
Tom Tom, Much of this will obviously depend on the size and configuration of the room where you're playing. I used the Z-2200 system with an audience of 80 and fired my vocals through the keyboard and it was more than sufficient for a rom that measured aproximately 40 feet wide, 80 feet long and the ceiling height was about 20 feet. Everyone raved how good everything sounded. A few weeks ago, using the 2200 system, I rigged up using my Alesis 6-channel mixer, plugged in two mics, the keyboard and a guitar, then ran everything out of the 2200 with no problems at all. We had myself singing through the keyboard, and two others who sang, one of which played an electric guitar. IMO, the Z-5500 blows away the 2200 for both quality and overall volume, plus even at higher volumes it's distortion free. If you're serious about lightening the load, this would be the way to go. However, I suggest purchasing the system from an outfit that has a good return policy--just in case it does't fit your needs. Good Luck, Gary
