Hi T2 Fans,

I would like to buy 1GB of RAM and a 40 to 60GB hard disk for my Tyros2. I was wondering if you could offer me tips on the bests deal you found on the DIMM chips and the Hard Drive.

Hi Tapas:

It's important to note that Yamaha only recommends "ECC" type PC133 dimm memory, and that the memory be installed in 'pairs'.

I've got two of the following 2 512MB DIMMs installed in my Tyros2:

KVR133X72C3/512 ECC Memory

Kingston's designation for their "ECC" memory is X72, and for their "non-ECC" memory is X64. Their non-ECC memory equivilent is: KVR133X64C3/512 Non-ECC Memory, so DON'T purchase that one. btw: ECC stands for: error correction code.

Purchased mine from: MWave back in Nov 2006 at a good price then. You may find it cheaper elsewhere.

Hard drive: I have installed in my T2 & recommend a Samsung MP603H or any of the Samsungs on Yamaha's T2 HD compatibility list and sticking with the 4200RPM vs 7200RPM drive as 7200RPM is noisier and you will not benefit from the speed increase due to the speed limitation (response) of the Tyros2 OS itself. Read more about my recommendations re: Tyros2 HD here .

If you need any help with installing, call me. There are a couple of tricks I'll share with ya.

Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks a million for your prompt and detailed response. It is always a pleasure to receive recommendations from the PRO!!

I did a little bit of research myself after browsing through your links and I agree you found the best deals on the compatible memory and Hard Drive for the Tyros2.

So I went ahead and ordered the same.

MWave.com had the best deal on the Kingston RAM.

Model# = KVR133X72C3/256 256MB ECC PC133 133MHZ CL3 168-PIN SDRAM DIMM.

I ordered 2 sticks at $35.43 each. The 2 day FedEx shipping was $7.33

NewEgg.com had the best deal on the Samsung 60GB Hard Drive.

Model# = SAMSUNG Spinpoint MP0603H 60GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive.

I ordered this for $60.99 plus $4.99 for 3 day UPS shipping.

Thanks again for saving me hours of research. This would help other Tyros2 owners who are contemplating adding a pair of DIMM chips and a quiet, reliable Hard Drive.

Hi Tapas. Myself and Scott discussed this on Skype a while ago and we both ended up purchasing the same, so you will be spot on with Scott's reply.

Thanks Craig and Manuel for the vote of confidence.

Manuel, this HD and Memory will let me experiment with all the goodies you have given me. I wish I could someday learn to play as you do. You are an inspiration to watch.

Guys - thanks so much for the timely topic! I followed your link and within a week my T2 will have more "brain cells" too! I have a hard drive, but have been wanting to upgrade the memory. I appreciate all your posts and again, thanks for the research and timely advice! Scott - I will let you know before I "crack the case open"... HA HA!

Hi Randy,

You will be very pleased with the Kingston SDRAM chips. I got my Samsung 60GB Hard Drive and the 2 Kingston 256MB SDRAM chips delivered this morning. It took less that 10 minutes to open the covers and stick in the two DIMM chips and slide in the Hard Drive.

Everything is working perfectly.

I am very pleased with Scott and Craig’s recommendations. This was the easiest upgrade. The whole process from ordering through installation was painless.

General Note: Make sure you don’t throw away the small plastic bag containing the 4 Hard Drive screws that came with your Tyros2. The Samsung HD did not come with any mounting screws. You would need to use the ones supplied by Yamaha.

Excellent and timely post for me as well. My next mission is to add both a hard drive and some RAM to my T2. For now I have been getting by with a couple of USB memory sticks ( 512 and 256 ) and no Ram.

I was thinking of taking the Ram from my Motif ES also.. I think I have 512mb in there, and I never use it.

I am pleasantly surprised to find just how quiet this Samsung Hard Drive is. You would need to place your ears right next to the top right of the Tyros2 to check if the hard disk is spinning or not. I have never encountered a quieter hard drive. Scott, this was a good find.
