Anyone else like this Nora Jones tune
"Don't Know Why" ? I can't stop singing it. It has that familiar, heard it before sound, but still shows a freshness to it. I just love it. Great tune for early in the night ... not too slow, but not a fast tune either. Nice easy eight beat - simple piano & bass arrangement will work wonders on it.
Look it up ..... I hope you like it.

Here's an interesting footnote....Nora Jones is the daughter of Ravi Shankar. She has already won a grammy for her Jazz work.

I also like her a lot. Actually the whole CD that includes this song is terrific. She gave a concert very recently in Portugal and we were lucky to see it integraly in one of the TV channels. The concert had a very intimate atmosphere; she played both a Rhodes and an acoustic piano. Like UD says: very simple arrangements, but a musical delight...

Oh Great! Now I'm gonna' have another tune in my head that won't stop playing. When I get to New Jersey Dave, it's your turn to buy the beer.

Cheers,

Great song, great voice. The first time I heard her she reminded me of Carol King... she doesn't really sound like her, but has the same kind of smooth and easy feel.

I saw her in Annaheim for the Elton John NAMM show . Great show I might add !

She was probably one of the best acts . Great Chords .
Jewel , Ray Charles , Bruce Hornsby , Take Six to name a few other acts to pay tribute.
Elton tried to play the organ but ........

Might I also suggest another up and comer in the Jazz vain - Joyce Cooling. She was voted best new Jazz artist. She has some dynamite stuff. Between her and Jeff Kashiwa, some of the best new Jazz artists around -- if you like Jazz.

Give em a listen.

Gary .... c'mon.... even with the so-called 'wild' Alan Freed RnR shows at the Brooklyn Paramount, the 50's were milktoast compared to the 60's .... ....

Yeah Tony, you're right. Alan Freed was kinda' layed back, but I was thinkin' more along the lines of Wolfman Jack and Baltimore's Hotrod Holbere. If I recall, Hotrod hit the airways sometime in 1955 or maybe a little earlier, and a lot of the songs he was putting on the air were not popular until a couple years later. What was really neat back then was that most of the male entertainers wore tuxedos and the gals were dressed in incredible evening gowns. Not only did they sound greate, they looked great too. Guess that's why I also wear a tux, at least I can look great--even on the off nights.

Cheers,

Gary

Another great tune and in the same mood is a remake by Celine Dion, "At Last". It was originally done by Etta James. Great arrangement and guaranteed to "stick in your head"... well, at least in my head.

"At last" has a few great remakes ..... look for Lou Rawls with Dianne Reeves, and Christina Agulera too.

I like the Rawls/Reeves effort (he has such a GREAT voice, and hers isn't bad either ), but IMHO the tune BELONGS to Etta .... Celine Dion ??? ...
Speaking of female jazz artists, if you ever have a chance to see Diana Kraul in person DO SO!!! ... the lady is a great talent, vocally and instrumentally ..... and, yes, and visually too ....

Gary ..... AHHH, the WOLFMAN ... many late nights listening to him on NYC radio ...
and, yes, they did dress like entertainers in those days... in fact, if you go to a 'doo-wop' show today, they STILL do ... and some of these guys and gals still look and sound great ... saw a show produced by Bowser (Sha-na-na) last year and some of my friends saw this year's ... they said Jay Black is still singing in the same keys, and still nailing the big notes!!! ... as is Johnny Meastro ...
As for today's dress, like you I still like putting on the tux ... My last club/piano lounge gigs (jobs) have been a little more casual and I've gone with the dark suit, dark shirt look ... Perhaps this sould be a seperate thread ... we'll find out ...

Well, after singing the praises of Norah's album .... a fan gave me a copy of the CD tonight! It's a winner from start to finish. She even has two favorite old standards that i do .... "Cold, cold heart" and " The Nearness of you" ..... really nice stuff. Her voice goes right through me. Haven't felt like this since I first heard Karen Carpenter. Shivers .......

Now I know what drew me to this tune .... it has a similar chord/melody structure to "Without a song" ..... I think I'll blend them into a medley .... should work well !

While transcribing "Don't Know Why", I noticed the Floyd Cramer influence in the piano. While this is certainly not a country song, it amazes me how often his styling still shows up.

Floyd played on a great many recordings that weren't country. He did the piano for my friend's song "Bread and Butter" back in the 60's. He did a great many rock 'n roll sessions back then.

Yeah, it's nice isn't it? I've been playing it with only piano and live bass & drums. That's all the tune really needs to seel it. If you try using a style ... thin it WAY down to let the live piano chords shine through. This is a GREAT way for some of you to break the "arranger chains" and just play the song yourself. It sounds SO GOOD simple. Leaves room for expression with the vocal ... I am really lovin' this tune.

Hey Tony, Etta owns most every song she does! Have you heard her Billie Holiday collection? Also, believe it or not, her Christmas record is great! And her Muscle Shoals soul sessions rock.---- o.k. I'm a big fan-------
And yes, Diana Krall is wonderful. It is just not fair that one human can have such a voice and play so well (real jazz too)and STILL be a total BABE! God likes her a lot!

I have to head to the Garden State sometime in mid June to shoot photos of state wildlife and fisheries personell. That should take about half a day. The rest of the day will be spent shooting photos of folks fishing. However, before heading back to Maryland, I hope we can get together and tilt a couple brewskis. I'll let you know of the exact date when the time gets closer.

As I mentioned a few months back I saw Ms. Wilson in the lounge/cafe setting at Mohegan or Foxwoods ..... can't remember which casino, but her show was fabulous ... Ms. Wilson, piano, bass & drums ... nothing else needed ... pure talent, pure class, pure magic ......
