Gary .... c'mon.... even with the so-called 'wild' Alan Freed RnR shows at the Brooklyn Paramount, the 50's were milktoast compared to the 60's .... ....

Good call Uncle Dave, I've been entranced by "come away with me" for awhile now but I didn't know the artist. To see and hear, go to : www.norahjones.com

Yeah Tony, you're right. Alan Freed was kinda' layed back, but I was thinkin' more along the lines of Wolfman Jack and Baltimore's Hotrod Holbere. If I recall, Hotrod hit the airways sometime in 1955 or maybe a little earlier, and a lot of the songs he was putting on the air were not popular until a couple years later. What was really neat back then was that most of the male entertainers wore tuxedos and the gals were dressed in incredible evening gowns. Not only did they sound greate, they looked great too. Guess that's why I also wear a tux, at least I can look great--even on the off nights.

Cheers,

Gary

Another great tune and in the same mood is a remake by Celine Dion, "At Last". It was originally done by Etta James. Great arrangement and guaranteed to "stick in your head"... well, at least in my head.

"At last" has a few great remakes ..... look for Lou Rawls with Dianne Reeves, and Christina Agulera too.

I like the Rawls/Reeves effort (he has such a GREAT voice, and hers isn't bad either ), but IMHO the tune BELONGS to Etta .... Celine Dion ??? ...
Speaking of female jazz artists, if you ever have a chance to see Diana Kraul in person DO SO!!! ... the lady is a great talent, vocally and instrumentally ..... and, yes, and visually too ....

Gary ..... AHHH, the WOLFMAN ... many late nights listening to him on NYC radio ...
and, yes, they did dress like entertainers in those days... in fact, if you go to a 'doo-wop' show today, they STILL do ... and some of these guys and gals still look and sound great ... saw a show produced by Bowser (Sha-na-na) last year and some of my friends saw this year's ... they said Jay Black is still singing in the same keys, and still nailing the big notes!!! ... as is Johnny Meastro ...
As for today's dress, like you I still like putting on the tux ... My last club/piano lounge gigs (jobs) have been a little more casual and I've gone with the dark suit, dark shirt look ... Perhaps this sould be a seperate thread ... we'll find out ...

Well, after singing the praises of Norah's album .... a fan gave me a copy of the CD tonight! It's a winner from start to finish. She even has two favorite old standards that i do .... "Cold, cold heart" and " The Nearness of you" ..... really nice stuff. Her voice goes right through me. Haven't felt like this since I first heard Karen Carpenter. Shivers .......
