I play with both a Tyros and a Korg Triton. They both use stereo Volume pedals. I would like to use a single pedal with a Y-Jack to control both of them. Anyone have any luck hooking up this kind of volume pedal?

It will work fine..If you are referring to audio and not midi[controll 7 or 11].

I wouldn't do it for two reasons. First, both keyboards do not use the same voltage power supply--one is 12 volts and the other, if I racall, runs on either 16 or 18 volts. That could cause a problem, depending on where in the output circuit the volume control is used.

The second is you may have an impedience mismatch, again, depending on where in the circuitry the volume is regulated. One may be on the output, while the other may be in the pre-amp section. Not a good idea to hook them together.

The best way to accomplish this safely is to physically attach a pair of foot volume controls together so when you depress one, the other also is depressed at the same time. Essentially, they would be side by side, the bases glued together and the pedals attached together by means of a lightweight bar or screws.

Good Luck,

Gary

If it's a passive pedal, there shouldn't be any risk, right? That just sounds like needless worry...voltages and such. It's an audio connection that is paired with another audio connection. Should be the same as plugging two instuments into two jacks in an amp. We did that for YEARS.
I'm no electriction, but I would not worry about doing that hookup.

The best way is to use a set of VCA (voltage controlled amplifier) chips which can be tied together and controlled from a single expression pedal resistor. Of course this would need a bit of electronics to be designed. Another option which isn't so daft as it sounds is to use LDR (light dependant resistors).. use the pedal to control a lamps brightness inside a closed box together with a few light dependant CdS resistors for altering the signal levels to each keyboard... You could also try replacing the potentiometer in thepedal with a 4 gang device...?

I must be missimg something,, as Dave mentioned, your connections are coming from the output jacks of the keyboards to a passive volume pedal that acts as a "pot", then continues to the amp.. There is no difference then if the keyboards are connected to the amp..All the keyboards have a nominal impedance that amps[and volume pedals] can handle..We are making more out of this then we need too. As Dave said we 've been doing this for years..

Wow, if I have to get out my occiliscope for this project, you can forget it. LOL

I have a Yamaha FC7 which when plugged into my Tyros controls the volume. If I unplug the pedal and plug it into my Triton it controls the volume - Just fine.

What I'm trying to do is find a cable that has a single female stereo jack that splits into two MALE Stereo plugs. I went to Radio Shack and they have a MONO cable for this, but NOT a Stereo. Rather than getting out my soldering iron and some cable, does anyone know if this is available PRE-MADE?

This would save me a ton of space not having to use TWO pedals. I find it hard to believe no-one else playing two keyboards has this issue or that someone has not come out with this out of necessity. hmmmm

Al,

you might find your speacial cable here http://www.hosatech.com/

or you can have one made easily at Gig Cables http://www.gigcables.com/

Guess I must have missed something along the pike. I've never seen a single potentiometer hooked to more than a single device. When two instruments are connected through the same input, the output inpedence of their respective transformers is halved because they become parallel, resistive devices. That's what pre-amps and mixers have separate channels, blocking diodes and lots of other directional components that prevent impedience changes and problems with polarity differences between various types of equipment. Personally, if they were my keyboards, I would go with either a 4-gang pot in the foot-volume control and dual controls physically hooked together.

Good Luck,

Gary

Gary, isn't the master volume on the keyboard amp the same situation as the twin feed into the passive volume pedal?
