How many "insert" effects can the PSR1000/2000 use at the same time? Can you use more than one insert effect per song? Does either model allow you to utilize the DSP when recording styles (DSP beyond basic reverb, and chorus) That's one of my biggest gripes with the sequencer on my 550. A good example is when I record a song that has two guitar parts which require an insert effect to get a good sound.. I saw the specs on the 2000 said 4 DSP and the 1000 says 1 DSP... Does this mean the 2000 can utilize multiple insert effects per song????

Anyone use "inserts" in their recording?

Dunno about the 2000 but the 740, which is the earlier version, has 4 DSPs, all of which can be used as insert effects at the same time, in spite of what the manual says. DSP4 is supposed to be just for vocal harmony but I got it to work on the main voice via sysex. The sysex overrides the manual settings on the keyboard and in turn the manual settings override the sysex. You can also apply the reverb, chorus and variation as well so between them you can make some real weird noises.

Looking at the 2000 manual it appears to be very similar to the 740, while the 1000 is similar to the 640 which has only one DSP. The sysex is almost identical which is what you would expect for XG machines. Don't forget, the 740 and 2000 have essentially an MU100 synth locked up inside them except that you don't get the MU100 panel (that would be a tremendous feature - you would never need a 'workstation" with that as well as the main panel). I use the inserts a lot because I don't use the panel organs due to no touch response. The inserts give me the ability to mimic some of the panel organs and I can get the layered effects of the panel organs by using the R1 and R2 voices. Also, which the manual doesn't mention, if you turn on a voice with sysex using the Multi Part function, you get an extra layer to which you can add all the insertion stuff. I use my laptop for all this connected via the "to host" connector because it makes the whole thing portable. You can use something like XGEdit or XGWorks for this though they are really designed for sound cards and rack mounted synths and can only address two DSPs.

740 could run 4 insert effects at the same time??? Geez didn't that make the processor lag a bit or run a little sluggish? My 550 is stated at running 3 DSP (only one of those being insert) Weren't there some complaints about specific styles on the 740 if played at high BPM's would be a little sloppy or something along those lines?? I'm just courious on this because some of the larger pro synths recently started allowing the use of more than one insert effect, and they have much larger processors. I just don't see how the 740 was capable of running 4 inserts (not to say you're wrong), but never heard of it doing this.....

The only problem I've found with the 740 is that playing a fast style with all the instruments and then hitting as many notes as possible as fast as possible will cause the rhythm to slow down. The reason for this is that the CPU is a 28MHz processor running at 7MHz. Yamaha's excuse is that the support chips won't run any faster. However, the DSPs are in a different chip and not constrained by the limitations of the CPU. I've never had the slow down problem on the 740 because I've never been able to play that many notes at once in a normal tune. I imagine this is why Yamaha were never too worried about the problem.
