I know of Cakewalk Sonar, but is there some other alternative that will record multitrack audio with good results?

The ACID family does an Excellent Job.....I use the pro with very nice results....

I do not record directly with it, I use it to tweak audio files after I record with a stand-alone Fostex... however, many people DO use Kristal Audio Engine (KAE) and they really like it. I like it a lot. There is a very helpful forum. And for now, it is FREE. They will charge for it in the future.

EDIT: I forgot to mention another, newer, more robust one that is also free at this time -- Reaper.

and of course do not forget about the good old CEP (now adobe audition)
it cost a little.

I've been using Cubase SX for a couple of years now with lots of success. They say Cubase 4 (the newest version) is out of this world and is a complete package with plug-ins anv VSTis. It runs around $1000, but you can get an educational discount for around $400, or a slightly lighter version for $200 called Cubase Studio. (the main thing you loose with the lighter version is professional scoring).

Obviously you'll have to show educational proof, or just buy it 'for' your son.

You may want to give Audicity a try. You'll find it at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and there's no charge.
