You should go to Guitar Center or similar places and try them out.

For really cheap electric drums with decent sounds try YAMAHA DD55 for $150-200. It has 7 pads. It also has built-in rhythms/songs(music and bass lines) for practicing styles. The only drawback, the base and the high-hat are cheap keyboard sustain pedals/footswitch. There is also Roland SPD-6 that is only $250.00 that will give you professional quality sound. I think it may have real bass pedal action (extra). But it only has 6 pads which is a drag and also no rythm functions.

Next level-up for about $500-700 will give you better sounds and real base pedal action (extra). Try Roland SPD-20 which has 8 pads.

Then the high ends will be those FULL size sets with individual pads. Yamaha, Roland and couple other brands can be found quite easily at the stores.

lukitoh,

I am looking for something for about $1000 or even more if necessary. Something that looks like a real set, but it is electronic with decent sound. What about the Roland V set?

Those V-drums looks nice although I have not personally tried them. The high end models have two categories. First category has touch sensitive pads without actual drum membranes. The more expensive models have actual drum membranes and have more realistic feel like acoustic drums.

You really should go to Guitar Center or similar places - they have them there I'm sure. There are also websites for drummers that may help give good recommendations since I don't play much of the high end models. Can't help you much in that category.

$1000 does not go too far in the world of digital drums. I built me set up around the Roland SPD20. It's an 8 pad unit with 4 add on jacks for other controllers. I added the bass pedal, HiHat pedal(requires 2)and snare pad. This is the cheapest, smallest, best sound you can get, and it feels remarkably like a real set if you get a V-Pad for the snare.

The bass, HiHat & Snare are the core of any kit, and these three items look and feel very much like the real thing. It takes some getting used to, to find a comfort zone with the 8 pads for cymbals and toms - but most drummers that use my set love it after 10-15 minutes.

Cymbal & toms are easy to get used to with a hard surface but the snare really feels much better with the mesh head. My whole setup measures about 2 1/2 feet wide by 1 1/2 feet deep. Sets up in 10 minutes, packs up into two small bags .... not including the tube stand I use (Roland issue)

Uncle Dave,

Thanks for the info. My question to you is how much a setup like yours would cost? What would you recommend for my case? If I have to pay more than $1000, that will be no problem.

SK880,
I sell the SPD20 and add ons at my store. I can quote you a price tomorrow when I get there. Again, as I stated earlier to you, most drummers feel the most comfortable playing on real drums and there are ways of muffiling drums to suit room acoustics. However, Uncle Daves suggestion is a good one for a low end electronic drum set which would be better than the Yamaha DD55.

Hello,

I am sorry I still have more questions:

What do you think of the following options:

1) Yamaha DS9XP DTXPRESS

2) Roland VClub Set

3) Pintech CS8SEST ConcertCast Silentech Kit
