$1000 does not go too far in the world of digital drums. I built me set up around the Roland SPD20. It's an 8 pad unit with 4 add on jacks for other controllers. I added the bass pedal, HiHat pedal(requires 2)and snare pad. This is the cheapest, smallest, best sound you can get, and it feels remarkably like a real set if you get a V-Pad for the snare.
The bass, HiHat & Snare are the core of any kit, and these three items look and feel very much like the real thing. It takes some getting used to, to find a comfort zone with the 8 pads for cymbals and toms - but most drummers that use my set love it after 10-15 minutes.
Cymbal & toms are easy to get used to with a hard surface but the snare really feels much better with the mesh head. My whole setup measures about 2 1/2 feet wide by 1 1/2 feet deep. Sets up in 10 minutes, packs up into two small bags .... not including the tube stand I use (Roland issue)
