Hi there guys, I am not a professional singer or player, I have recently bought a Korg PA-80 and would like to buy a decent dynamic microphone for a reasonable price (max limit is $100), I have kind of heavy voice, would love a microphone with no color adding to voice. How is the Shure PG58? I really don’t care about the brands just need some user opinions on good mics.
Thanks.

Totally agree. This mic is tried and tested and is the preferred mic for bands and performers around the world. For one hundred bucks -- shure SM 58 is your mic.

I would recommend the SM 58 also.

The 58 can be muddy if used on a bassy voice. I recommend the EV N/D 767. About $129, and well worth the difference. You'll have to EQ the Sure a TON to get close to the EV sound.
The SM58 is durable, but in today's high fidelity market, it laks the upper frequency range. Modern PA's are so much better than the ones used in 1958 when that mic was made.

I'm going to go agaist the grain on this one. For me, the SM-58 was never a good mic. My voice is too deep and too soft for that particular mic. However, the Samson Q7, which sells for under $70 has been superb for handheld mic usage, not only for me, but for a lot of others on this and many other forums.

Whatever mic you decide upon, make sure the outlett selling it has a liberal return policy so you can return it in a reasonable time if the sound is not what you're looking for.

Good Luck,

Gary

I use AKG D880 with PA80 and happy with it. I tried both SM58 and D880 at Mars (before they went out of business) and liked D880 better with my voice which is not heavy.

I also have the condenser mic AKG C5900 which I like much better, but don't use it often as I then need to hook up another piece (my Behringer Shark) to provide it with phantom power.

Thank you so much for the responses guys, really appreciate it, the return policy is pretty much non-existent on microphones as I am being told due to "health" reasons? So that is why I really appreciate your opinions. I really don't know if I can try mics in local guitar center before I buy them? Uncle Dave, all I am finding on web is EV N/D 767a, not EV N/D 767? is additional "a" means anything are they diferent in any way? thanks.

Wow talk about coincidence, I bought my D880 at a Mars closeout in Miami years ago, and for me nothing I have tried comes close. certainly not the sm58 (which i always carry for singers sitting in-it's universally accepted and so durable). I went for a hi-end Sennheiser for a while afterward, but found it actually too good. too uncolored, too smooth. Reviews in Keyboard Mag years ago rated the D880 as a very "sexy" mic w/high coloration..I like that..
