I just bought a guitar..a Gibson..doesnt sound real good.I did the mistake of ordering it home and when I checked it out it sounded very thin and metallic.I wondered..if I change the strings to,say, a gauge 11 gibson..will I get better sound. Will changing strings make a guitar sound really better. Its smaller than a jumbo...u can say a medium size. Its acoustic..with a pick-up provided separately.Also..does the sharpness of the sound get muffled with higher gauged strings?? Pls.ADVICE

Heavier strings will increase the performance of a guitar with a solid top, but actually hurt the opposite. If the wood doesn't resonate ... crappy sound. Sometimes the guitar needs the heavy guage to set the tone, other times it just muffles everything. The pickup placement has lot to do with the sound too. Sometimes just moving the unit a tad will get better results.
Gibson makes a lower end line called Epiphone that is usually NOT solid woods .... check the specs and if you have a solid spruce top .... try using medium guage Phospher Bronze strings. That'll add some "zing" to the strings.
Brass strings will be brighter still, but you sacrifice some bass response.
