Terry, either you have inside connections to the higher ups at Yamaha or Scato's GC was one of the fortunate stores that got some of the very first shipment of Mo' ES's..... So which one is it Terry - Higher Ups; or you just happened to be at the right store at the right time?

I am making plans to get the Motif ES 8 also but I'm not in any hurry (next month will do just fine ). I did get the Motif ES DVD yesterday and my wife and I watched it. This is well worth getting. A lot of things that the ES does seem like common-sense things that should have been done in the first Motif - like chord recognition on the arpeggios - duh! It's nice that the DVD producers actually acknowledge that chord-recognition is a technology used in arrangers (!).

But it occurs to me that with five button-assignable arps plus the slide controllers and stuff, the ES is very close to being an arranger... at least it has the potential to be one if the user so chooses. The main difference between arps on the Motif and styles on an arranger is the auto-fill (aka drum pickup) that happens when you move between verse and chorus patterns. This is something that we're all used hearing to from typical 20th-century pop music, but pop music isn't what it used to be and today you often hear songs that go from verse to chorus and back without the drum segue. The Motif ES easily does this right out of the box. Plus, the way you can slice up drum-loop samples and create variations just begs to be used in an arranger fashion.

I don't think there's any doubt that the Motif ES is primarily a powerful production workstation with live applications, but it crosses into the arranger field in many ways too. This'll likely be the synth that gets the pros to pay more attention to arrangers. I think it's a sign of things to come, and probably the Motif ES will be the synth of choice for 2004.

Im really leaning more towards Yamaha.. Ive been a Korg user for many years, but the PAxpro, is looking to be a let down.. I reapeat, it seems to be, but who knows..

The only thing about the motif is the user interface, has it been refined?

Or is it something that will work with the PC instead?
In other words, is it better to hook up a laptop to it or your personal pc, and use the PCs screen?

Congrats Terry. I was mildly surprised when you went to the Fantom S, but I can understand why too. I too found the Fantom's OS very much to my liking, with some cool features that I'd really love to have on the Motif, especially along the lines of what Jim mentioned about fills. The Fantom has it's arps set up so that striking different keys allowed for different drum patterns to be played including fills in
it's "performance" mode. I could have used it to play live and just play left handed bass and right hand rythym. Overall though when I played the Fantom, it just never really "sang" to me. That was the case with the original Fantom, and it never really changed for me with the newer models. I'd miss some of those Motif sounds I've grown to love ( Esp the Rhodes / clavi sounds and the plug in AN150 analog modeled synths )

My mind is already made up. I'm going for the ES 7. In the past I've never commited to buying a board sight unseen, but I like my orignal Motif enough that I'm going to make an exception this time. My Mo 6 is already up for sale along with my PSR2000. I never was able to get comfortable with the 2k, even though the one I have now works just the way it is supposed to. No matter how I try I just can't overcome the key feel and the lack of a dedicated seperate control for panel voice volume, and I just don't like the drum and bass sounds, so I'll tough it out w/o a backup to the PA80 until I find something else that fits my needs.

That might be a PA1x pro, but at the price and with a bit of uncertainty, that one is really gonna have to be in my hands before I commit to it. Like UD, the lack of speakeers is a big minus for me.

Otherwise, if I keep the PA80 and go the backup route, perhaps a used G1000 or better for me an EM2k, ( I want speakers ) or possibly something from the VA series ( I liked every Roland arranger I've ever played, just wasn't thrilled with the OS ). I'd still like to listen to a Ketron up close and personal too. The only Yamaha arrangers that would be suitable for me would be the Tyros and or the 9k pro, and I would miss the speakers.

AJ and all thanks for the input. AJ trust me, you will not be gambling on buying the ES site unseen. If you like the Mo the ES will knock your socks off. The interface is pretty much the same as I recall on the original, not too intuiitive and the manual is not any better than the original, so there most definately is a higher learning curve on it compared to Rolands easy interface. The arps and loop remix along with the new voices are worth the price of admission alone.

To me, it's not as much the arps that blur the lines towards an arranger, because they are just arpin' one voice primarily. IMO it would more likely be the patterns and master mode that blurs the line.

I really don't think this board will change the opions of the "pros" about arrangers, or visa versa, arranger players about workstations, they really are still two vastly different boards and the way one has to go about them.

Arrangers are still a lot more fun and easier to just sit down and play completed stuff.

How do you compare the quality sounds on Tyros with Motif ES? Are they comparable? I am talking about acoustic instruments sounds.

Many are exactly the same such as the mega guitars. Most of the sweet sounds are there too. The new triple strike piano is awesome. So in short all are very comparable if not the same. The Tyros might have a few more, although I haven't been through all of the sounds yet on the Mo yet.

I will say the Mo obviously takes better advantage of the megas with the arppegiator.
