I don't know which is which but you need a different format. synth's write everything on 1 track where software seperates the tracks. One is Format 0 and the other is Format 1. If you have something like Cakewalk just go to SAVE AS and it will allow you to convert it to the format that you need.

Korg i3 can load midi format 1 and format 0,
must be some other problem with the files.
Usage is: Load std midi to song 0
Disk format must be 720k DD PC formatted (or formatted with Korg i3).

Maybe the file format is really invalid,
you can check and repair the file on a PC with GNMIDI http://www.iicm.edu/Cpub

And for playing only: it is more comfortable to play it from computer through midi cable.
Don't forget to send GM Reset command before
playing a GM song (GNMIDI can do this with options). The i3 changes into song mode
and selects song #9 and then can play.
Other models have a song play mode that must
be selected.
